Robert Dagle is the Applied Catalysis II Team Leader and Chief Research Engineer within the Energy Processes & Materials Division at PNNL. Mr. Dagle manages teams of researchers engaged in the development of innovative catalytic processes for the upgrading of biomass or fossil derived oxygenated intermediates (e.g., ethanol, syngas) into renewable or low carbon fuels and chemicals. Mr. Dagle manages multiple projects sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Bioenergy Technologies Office. Current projects are aimed at converting biomass- and waste-derived ethanol into value-added fuels and chemicals, including butadiene, olefins, lubricant, and high octane gasoline, diesel and jet blendstock fuels. Mr. Dagle also manages a project co-sponsored by DOE Fossil Energy and Southern California Gas Company (SoCalGas) aimed at developing a process for integration of capture and conversion of CO2 into chemicals. Finally, Mr. Dagle also manages a project co-sponsored by DOE Hydrogen & Fuel Cell Technology Office and SoCalGas aimed at developing a process for the direct conversion of natural gas into CO2-free hydrogen and valuable solid carbon co-product. Mr. Dagle has research experience with multiple catalytic reactions and processes which includes the steam reforming of hydrocarbons and oxygenates, conversion of ethanol to fuels and chemicals, water-gas-shift reaction, reactive distillation, conversion of biomass-derived aqueous products to value-added fuels and chemicals, and syngas conversions. Mr. Dagle also has experience with integrating engineered catalysts within novel reactor architectures for process intensification purpose. His work has benefited clientele in both the government and private industry arena and has resulted in more than 60 journal articles and book chapters and numerous presentations. Mr. Dagle serves on the steering committee for the Chemical Catalysis for Bioenergy (CCB) Consortium, a DOE national lab-led R&D consortium dedicated to overcoming catalysis challenges for the conversion of biomass and waste resources into fuels, chemicals, and materials. Mr. Dagle is a Battelle Distinguished Inventor with 17 issued U.S. patents and one R&D 100 Award (2014).
