In the real world, perceptions of our skills are often based on how we present ourselves. While physical appearance is a consideration to some, far more important, particularly in professional life, are our language skills. For our thoughts, if un- (or ill-)communicated, will not serve the interests of others.Teaching in Korea, where English has become a critical skill for employment and promotion, I focus on the combination of language and "content." My areas of professional background are public administration and law, I've also worked in areas of tourism, cross-culturalism, and management. My principle area of English-teaching research and focus is "Content-based Instruction" (also known as CBI and CLIL, among others), and I have developed other areas of higher-competence over the past 20 years, including pronunciation skills development.The idea is the same, whether working with university students, business professionals, or children: go beyond simple English sayings, develop analytical and critical thinking skills while communicating in English (CALP, as opposed to BICS). After all, an 900 score on TOEIC is meaningless if you cannot address real-life issues, particularly in your field of business.
