Profile bio

About Robert Dutchen

Since my adolescence I have maintained a passion for animals. I was the child who brought home injured birds to nurture and I read every book from the local library about animals that I could get my hands on. For some time I believed I would enter into a veterinary career, as I had a limited perspective on what was out there. It wasn't until college when I discovered wildlife biology and conservation. I drifted away from physiology and medicine, and fell in love with the larger scale understandings of interactions and ecology from a species, population, and ecosystem perspective. Studying abroad my junior year in Tanzania, under a wildlife management program, further helped bring into focus my career aspirations, both in terms of my desire to do field research and the realization that the central role local people play in environmental and wildlife conservation. For my specific professional goals, I want to pursue a career as an animal behaviorist, conducting field research. I find the study of wildlife behavior fascinating and I hope to apply it in my striving for wildlife and ecosystem conservation. I would love to work in developing nations, specifically those within Africa, because of both the emerging conservation opportunities present as well as the valuable and unique input of a passionate local population. I attended Cornell University as an undergraduate where I majored in natural resources with a concentration in applied ecology. This provided me with an insight into management and policy, both very important elements which as a biologist I must understand and work with. As a graduate student I am currently pursuing my master's in animal behavior and conservation at Hunter College. Overall my aspirations are a synthesis of species specific behavior research intertwined with local involvement in order to promote ecosystem conservation.

Listed skills include Tree Identification, Wildlife Biology, Ecology, Environmental Awareness, and 24 others.
