• Responsible to the Master for the overall supervision of the department as related to ship productivity, ship maintenance, transportation objectives and operational cost control and stewardship. • Responsible to the Master for ensuring that equipment in the department’s care is safe to operate and for the mechanical maintenance of all machinery. • Expected to perform his or her duties in accordance with the Canada Shipping Act and Regulations, Canada Labour Code, Company Policies and Procedures.• Administering and directing the total operation of the Engine Department. • Supervising the safe, efficient and economical operation of all machinery throughout the vessel.• Undertaking the mechanical maintenance of all of the vessel’s machinery.• Operating the main propulsive machinery to the Master’s orders, subject to the limitations of its power, speed and fuel consumption.• Planning the physical maintenance of the engine room and other spaces for which the Chief Engineer is responsible.• Maintaining whatever records and reports are necessary for machinery maintenance and service records. • Enforcing safety regulations, safe working practices and approved procedures to support the Integrated Management System, giving special emphasis to: • Fire prevention • Pollution control • Fire fighting equipment • Instructing and training new staff, junior officers and engine crew members in: • Correctly operating and maintaining machinery • Safe working practices and procedures • Environmental protection equipment and procedures • Fire fighting techniques • Engine Department emergency procedures • Government and Company regulations • Maintaining the engine room in a perpetual state of preparedness for vetting. • Demonstrating clear leadership in the promotion and support of Algoma's Safety Culture. • Preparing work requests for equipment under his control.• Exercising control over Engine Room expenditures in keeping department operating within budget.
