I like to solve problems, any kind of problems. If you add to that a good analytical mind and pretty good grades in math and physics back when I was kid, it was almost certain that getting a career in science would be a good fit for me. And adult-me has not been disappointed.Coming to California - after getting my Masters in Optical engineering and my PhD in Physics back in France - was the final step for me to integrate a small company that was doing in-house development of imaging systems, notably for cosmetics companies. But anything is game for us, as long as there is optical works to do.Life in an only-engineer 4-person company is quite special. You have to juggle with multiple projects all the time, whether it is a conference, a new project under development or an emergency with a system on the other side of the world. But you learn.     Subject : Development of new strategies for laser ignition : application to aero-space propulsionLaser ignition is one of the most promising ignition technology for the next generation of combustion chambers. The concept is to focalise a short duration (~ns) laser pulse to induce a plasma (optical breakdown) at the focal point. It will act as a spark and can lead, in favorable conditions, to a stable flame kernel [1,2].The main objective of my thesis was to caracterize the spatial expansion of the plasma, the shockwave it induced, and measure the temporal evolution of the temperature and electronic density of the plasma using the LIBS technic [3], to have a better understanding of the phyisical processes leading to the optical breakdown and the ignition. A single-pulse configuration was compared to a dual-pulse configuration which showed encouraging resultats for the ignition in harsh conditions [4]. I also undertook optical breakdown tests in non-reactive monophasic and diphasic conditions.References :[1] Ronney, P.
