In this research lab, the focus of study is a marine phytoplankton called Prochlorococcus. Prochlorococcus are the most abundant phototrophic marine bacteria in the ocean. These tiny creatures are responsible for 20% of the worlds oxygen production. I am currently responsible for two research projects, one of which I have designed. The goal of the second project is to make a culture of prochlorococcus axenic. This means the culture will be pure prochlorococcus, and will not have any heterotrophic bacteria. During this past summer I worked on a research project looking for bacteria in ice samples taken from between 70 and 180 meters deep in ice sheets from Greenland and Antartica. This project required me to design a system for sterilizing the research equipment and determining the best way to screen the ice samples for cells. Show less
