About Robert Iler

I see patterns. When I face complex goals or challenges, I identify, analyze, and leverage patterns across what may seem like disparate variables to design and execute new processes, provide new opportunities, create first-in-kind roadmaps, and inform strategic decision-making to empower diverse organizations to excel. ✓With experience and knowledge that spans business, finance, manufacturing, design, hardware/software, and engineering, I bridge the gap between stakeholders and functions to turn “that’s impossible” into “that’s accomplished.” ✓My experience includes conducting material research; supporting the lead investigator for the ring dynamics study of a portion of the Cassini mission to Saturn; leading student projects; teaching advanced mathematics and physics; and serving as Integrated Master Scheduler for Raytheon Company, Space & Airborne Systems, and Integrated Scheduler for Boeing (Integrated Defense Systems). ✓Achievement Snapshot: As Student Researcher, Cassini Data Analysis, faced with an “impossible” task, invented a path that delivered a software routine written in IDL that transformed motion pictures from Imaging Sciences Subsystems on the spacecraft into a groundbreaking data roadmap. This accomplishment empowers researchers to understand the past and predict the future movements of a dusty ringlet adjacent to the outer edge of Saturn and expands knowledge of orbital dynamics. ✓I have an enduring and unquenchable passion for acquiring, applying, and sharing new information to stretch the boundaries of possible; this enthusiasm prompted me to question and engage a Nobel Prize winner in a lively discussion that opened the door to new possibilities in his research. Let’s continue to expand the boundaries of possible. Skills: Data Analysis; Data Management; Data Science; Research; Process Engineering; Project Management; Information Synthesis; Advanced Mathematics & Physics; Department of Defense (DoD) Projects; Teaching; Team Leadership.

Web Researcher

Waltham, Ma

Analyzed and monitored web content for reliability, accuracy, and appropriateness. Trained algorithms to identify inappropriate content.

2018 - 2019 ~1 yr

Graduate Assistant

Los Angeles, Ca

Instructed undergraduate students through clear communications of complex physics and mathematical concepts and graded the assignments for classes of 15-20. Classes included Physics 211: Classical Mechanics Lab; Physics 212: Optics and Thermodynamics Workshop; Physics 103: Optics Lab.

Sep 2015 - Dec 2018

Research Assistant: Materials Science Lab

Los Angeles, Ca

Conducted material research utilizing density functional theory. Troubleshot hardware/software issues. Processed and analyzed large data sets using Python, VASP, WIEN2K, and Quantum Espresso. Characterized theoretical materials for potential manufacturing and engineering projects. Qualified or eliminated prospective materials on anticipated applications (e.g., semiconductors) in tandem with physical and chemical properties.

2015 - 2018 ~3 yrs

Student Researcher, Cassini Data Analysis

Moscow, Id

Supported and advanced the project for advisor, who was lead investigator for ring dynamics study of a portion of the Cassini mission to Saturn. Selected Challenges: Needed to use and align motion pictures provided from wide and narrow-angle cameras from Imaging Sciences Subsystem (ISS) on the spacecraft that were moving at 76,000 mph in reference frame of planet’s core; no usable technique to serve as blueprint; Saturn’s B ring made up of trillions of particles moving at breakneck speed through space; rings were moving at their own nuanced speed of rotations; no coding experience. Selected Actions: Processed and analyzed images of Saturn’s faint rings, geometrically navigating images using Interactive Data Language (IDL). Analyzed data by reducing it to quantitative form. Used custom IDL routines to analyze orbital dynamics. Interpreted results in terms of physical laws and dynamics systems. Fit data to high-order Riemann function, allowing for prediction of ringlet motion over time. Resolved hardware/software challenges. Results: Enabled researchers to understand the past and predict the future movements of a dusty ringlet adjacent to the outer edge of Saturn and expand knowledge of orbital dynamics by inventing/following a new path to deliver successful software routine written in IDL that transformed camera images into a first-in-kind data roadmap.

2014 - 2015 ~1 yr

Student Project Manager, Laser Cutter

Moscow, Id

Led the project to design and construct custom-built laser cutter for class on construction of experimental instrumentation. Mentored team on effective work practices in engineering and manufacturing (including scheduling, earned value, and quantifiable backup data). Selected Challenges: Member of 5-person team of classmates with extensive talents and strengths but no experience in design and manufacturing; limited by $15,000 budget and deadline of end of the semester; no equipment to calibrate laser so team had to invent one; too costly to leverage University’s vendors. Selected Actions: Created CAD design; worked with manufacturing to take code from CAD and machine large parts made of aluminum; partnered with team members to secure low-cost vendors for laser, water cooler, and processer; inspected and repaired components; constructed and tested frame; coded and programmed actuators and motors; integrated operations; created user documentation. Results: Completed project on time and 16% under budget.

B2 Radar Modernization Program (Rmp), Preliminary Design Review (Pdr) Countdown (“Gate 5")

El Segundo, Ca

Charged with overseeing alignment of Integrated Master Plan, Integrated Master Schedule, Contract, and Scope of Work Documents required by Department of Defense (DoD). Selected Challenges: Given notice of 4 business days; project typically took 2 - 3 weeks and used up 180-200 person-hours; Control Account Managers (CAMs) were busy working on their portions of the PDR. Selected Actions: Created a real-time change process using multiple projectors and laptops; scheduled each CAM with time to appear in conference room; orchestrated the new process. Results: Delivered PDR-ready documents in 2 days (with buffer of 2 weekend days to review). Saved 100-120 hours.
