Selected Challenges: Needed to use and align motion pictures provided from wide and narrow-angle cameras from Imaging Sciences Subsystem (ISS) on the spacecraft that were moving at 76,000 mph in reference frame of planet’s core; no usable technique to serve as blueprint; Saturn’s B ring made up of trillions of particles moving at breakneck speed through space; rings were moving at their own nuanced speed of rotations; no coding experience. Selected Actions: Processed and analyzed images of Saturn’s faint rings, geometrically navigating images using Interactive Data Language (IDL). Analyzed data by reducing it to quantitative form. Used custom IDL routines to analyze orbital dynamics. Interpreted results in terms of physical laws and dynamics systems. Fit data to high-order Riemann function, allowing for prediction of ringlet motion over time. Resolved hardware/software challenges. Results: Enabled researchers to understand the past and predict the future movements of a dusty ringlet adjacent to the outer edge of Saturn and expand knowledge of orbital dynamics by inventing/following a new path to deliver successful software routine written in IDL that transformed camera images into a first-in-kind data roadmap.
