The market has changed in many ways over those years and the evolution of the Brewin Dolphin Group has been incredible. I have been lucky to participate in so much change and innovation. Leading teams of 50 to 300 staff I have met and worked alongside so much talent. Doing what I could for staff development probably provided me the most job satisfaction and no matter if it was large or small, playing a part has been the most rewarding aspect of my time with the firm. In Edinburgh and Newcastle I was able to introduce a training Academy for apprentices. A chance for keen and able students to begin their career and I am proud at just how many have gone on to become key staff. The Mentors, the Team Managers and Buddies, admittedly reluctant at the outset, were soon convinced when their support helped their proteges. The Regulatory environment introduced seemingly endless Change Cycles and the impacts across all areas of the firm were significant. Running Support and Operations still required the same dedication, the same man hours but achieving that with concurrent Project and Change Management introduced new learning opportunities! I couldn’t list them all but change from DotCom bubble bursting, Mifid I and II, FATCA, the Banking Crisis, AML I to V, CASS, Operational Risk, KYC, Suitability all had significant impacts to Business as Usual.

After 35 years with Brewin Dolphin I have decided it is time to move on, so at the end of this year I will be leaving a firm that I have with worked with as man and boy. Of course over those years there have been many changes, my own path has been continuous service but it has been with several different companies. Starting as a boy with Wood McKenzie, then a series of de mergers, takeovers, acquisitions led me to Brewin Dolphin. For over 25 years I worked in various locations around Edinburgh then moved to Newcastle to join the management team running Operations.

Change projects ranged in size from Small one off Projects to full blown Programmes. From Core System rebuilds to resigned Risk and Control Frameworks. Looking back its hard to imagine how the team managed to keep the operations running whilst committing so much extra effort to change but they always did manage.Working with Big Four for Compliance with Audit… and Internal Audit and Operational Risk also needed careful management of resource Audits on different Annual Cycles for AAF, for General Audit and for CASS. Developing Key Staff and then their understudies to be recognised Subject Matter Experts was important, as was helping them to have patience, yes it would be better to give your department overview once to all the auditors at the same time, but that was impossible to achieve. Its been a blast but I’m looking forward to fresh challenges. My late father used to say that hard graft and a good work ethic will take you a long way.... Add some common sense and you will manage anything.

Head of Operations across Newcastle and London Leading c200 staff across both locations and Operational functions.
