Glasshouse Supervisor
Current• Planning and organising day-to-day activities in the glasshouse department, prioritising and assigning daily tasks to individuals depending on the required work.• Supervising glasshouse technicians and casual workers from overseas. Monitor their performance.• Setup and maintain irrigation systems in glasshouses and in polytunnels.• Liaising with research and breeding teams to understand needs and to improve our services.• Weekly crop walks to monitor pests and diseases on a variety of crops, including strawberries, raspberries and blackberries. Using skills and knowledge from my BASIS Qualification.• Training new team members on a range of tasks, including the correct use of machinery. • Developing and updating SOPs for new machinery and to improve on current growing practices.• Represent the organisation when visited by external companies and government organisations, including APHA.• Interviewing perspective employees.• Attending meetings with the Plant Health Team to keep up to date with current issues and to support the line manager in delivering new guidelines from APHA.• Produce plant passports for all plant material taken off site.• Use of building management systems to control glasshouses and growth rooms environments.• Seasonal management of crops (strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, apples and more), including watering, identifying pest and disease, propagation, irrigation, pruning, weeding, picking, grafting.• Applying Plant Protection Products, using Knapsack sprayers and tactor applications.• Use of machinery, including forklifts, tractors and attachments, all-terrain vehicles, chainsaws, brush cutters, electric pruners.• Maintenance and repairs on polytunnels and glasshouse area.
