I joined this manufacturer to head up their Sales and Marketing efforts, focused on our key market, the Upstream market of the Oil and Gas Industry - but also seeking other market sectors in which to expand the sales of our core magnesium offering along with the range of nanoengineered technologies created here and within our parent company, Powdermet (a 2016 Inc.5000 award winner and a 2016 Weatherhead 100 selection). Being fundamentally an R&D-driven business, we have a tremendous capability to create market-differentiating technology, so significant effort is required in understanding the needs of our existing core market segments, and also where opportunity exists for our technologies in yet untapped market sectors.

I founded this commercial security business over eight years ago in order to have the opportunity to run my own business and gain some freedom that I’d lost in prior roles. Using many of the skills established in my previous positions, we created a strategy and implemented a business plan that carved out a niche and allowed us to establish a footprint in this region and grow in what is a very crowded business segment, in many cases utilizing unique technologies from sources we established in Asia and Europe. Throughout our brief history we’ve focused on the needs of industrial, commercial and institutional clients, and have been fortunate to have established long-term relationships with the bulk of our customer base. Creating FMS has also created personal freedom – grounding me here in NE Ohio as my children entered and passed through their high school years, and allowing me the chance to coach my children’s rec league sports, time more swim meets than I ever dreamed possible, and serve in roles as an officer on the high school’s athletic boosters and seven years on the Independence Local School’s Finance Committee.

Hired by the board of managers of this start-up business incubated in Cleveland and established around the premise of creating new consumer products for the safe application of household chemicals. Starting with a laptop in the local library, this role allowed me to truly tap into all of my past experiences, while also throwing me into a vastly new experience – establishing manufacturing operations and a supply chain in China to serve the North American market. At Applitech I was able to work hand-in-hand on product design and brand development (and be granted patents) while also overseeing the creation of packaging and retail merchandising. Also key to this role was significant time in China overseeing the creation of tooling, production operations, and a supply chain that could meet the needs of US retailers. On the domestic side of the business, I had the chance to create a manufacturer’s representative sales organization, while also personally calling on and managing national accounts including Wal-Mart, Target, Rite-Aid and CVS.

Recruited to join a new executive team at this privately-held 80-year old manufacturer of high performance industrial and architectural coatings. Our focus was to implement change and aggressive product development to assure long-term viability for what had become a stagnant business. Tnemec provided me the chance to work with a great executive team that the new CEO had pulled together. A strong leader and communicator, our CEO had also provided a very clear strategic vision of where the business needed to go – and allowed the executive staff the freedom to act on that vision. In assuming my role at Tnemec I was also handed a very talented staff from a broad range of backgrounds in marketing, and customer and technical service that we were able to reorganize to meet the demands of the new business focus. This role also allowed me to utilize my past M&A experience - to oversee the acquisition of a Texas-based coatings businessKey to the business was feeding an extremely talented independent sales rep network hungry for new technology. With the Marketing organization working closely with R&D and the Sales staff we were able to create and launch 27 new products over an 18 month period – surpassing the company’s previous five years of market releases.

This role was achieved thanks to ICI’s policy of placing some younger managers in high-profile “stretch” roles to test their growth potential. Coming out Marketing in a small adhesives division into this role represented a tremendous challenge, including now reporting to both the North American CEO and the Head of Global Strategy in the UK, and moving out of a primarily a Marketing, Branding and Merchandising function to a position with a focus in Finance and Strategy. I often describe my transition into this role as comparable to trying to drink from a fire hose - it seemed everything I touched was new to me, but it was a great experience. I was fortunate in my initial year in this role to work for a CEO who had at one time held this same position - a great mentor who aided me significantly in this transition. In this role I had oversight of strategic planning for the Americas, competitive intelligence for the same region, management and divestment of brownfield sites throughout the US, public relations for Paints North America, and our acquisition efforts for the business. While in this role I implemented a new Strategic Planning process to the businesses of Paints in North America, oversaw $33 million in exceptional funds while managing a reorganization that provided $19 million in annual cost savings, and divested brownfield assets netting the business $3 million. I also had the opportunity to oversee a project utilizing McKinsey & Company in the creation of a radically new retail concept for the North American paint market.

I came to ICI from Stanley tasked with helping to grow an extremely profitable $40 million division surviving on one key product into a business with a well-rounded portfolio of successful adhesive and sealant technologies. This role allowed me the opportunity to do some exciting business-wide re-branding and re-merchandising, ultimately netting 25% margin growth, and expanding successfully into Canada and Latin America so that those markets grew to represent 15% of our business. These efforts, along with some radical new patented merchandising systems allowed us to grow 15% per annum in my last three years there.

Stanley Door allowed me the opportunity to not only do exciting design work in the Engineering function, but also to transition from that role into Marketing and into a position that allowed me to work across all functions of the organization in bringing new products to market. I also gained my first patents while working at Stanley.
