About Robert M.

Growing up I was the only black student in a school of 700 pupils. It’s difficult to believe now, but I didn’t find it hard at the time. I had a good group of friends and don’t remember feeling alienated, I accepted it as how it was and got on with the business of being a teenager.Looking back, even as a very young man, I can think of many comments and incidents of aggression directed towards me that I brushed off and ignored, mainly because I wanted to be part of the group and not stand out.Unfortunately, as I grew older, these incidents grew in frequency, intensity, and impact. I have been chased home by National Front members, threatened with knifes by skinheads, stood silently in fear whilst so called friends sang 'white white white is right, kick em out lets fight fight fight!' on local football terraces, and made a hastily planned exit through a crowd of party goers as Combat 18 attempted to corner me in a busy nightclub.Luckily for me, these types of events are in my past, but the impact is still felt today. I still get nervous when seeing people dressed a certain way, with a certain hair style, I still get anxious within certain geographical areas of my youth, and I have ensured that my external appearance suggests I'm not to be tested, even though I'm much more of a diplomat than a man of certain action.My early experience and awareness now, of the impact racism can have on a person’s well-being and professional life is what motivates and pushes me to be increasingly active in addressing issues of inequality today. Working in an environment that champions these values and pursues systems that promote equity and fairer access of opportunity for everyone regardless of background is really important to me. I'm determined to do my part in leaving this world in a better state than when I entered it, and ensuring that fewer and fewer people have to go through what I went through in the pursuit of a better, more equitable society.I have also recently completed a CIPD qualification which is helping me to understand organisational systems and identify ways in which I can contribute to the agenda of dismantling barriers that are preventing a greater diversity of talent at leadership level.
