I have been active within architectural education and the associated spatial disciplines since 1995, delivering, developing and managing programmes; working with young people, academics and a variety of other professionals.My pedagogic research expertise includes student transition into HE, peer assisted support and learner confidence, all centred around student experience. In October 2019, my work in this area was acknowledged, as I was awarded a prize for Teaching Excellence (Enhancing the Student/staff Experience). I have also supported a Learning Development Tutor, on an ESRC-funded doctoral study, that responds to research commissioned by RIBA and HEFCE into educational inequalities.Over the years, with students, I have explored issues around vacant and ‘ugly’ buildings, coastal town regeneration, food poverty and the importance of common space in the city. I believe working with the ‘existing’ is fundamental to the practice of architecture/interior architecture, exploring issues of preservation, restoration, alteration, or obliteration, in and around the transformation of unused or underused buildings/spaces through adaptive reuse.I have also worked collaboratively with other members of our team and regional partners, such as the Urban Room Folkestone, which resulted in our students exhibiting their work as part of Magic Carpets, a pan European project facilitated by the Folkestone Fringe, co funded by Creative European Programme of the EU. In the past I have worked on Arts Council funded research projects through Urban-lab and more recently established the Bureau of Alternative Spatial Occupancy (a think and sometimes do tank).
