After 25 years of service to New Haven's largest inner city communities, Robert retired as the chief executive officer of DN Community Mental Health this past month. He states that his legacy as the agency's CEO is the erosion of mental illness as synonymous with a person's identity, the ongoing fight to destigmatize mental illness. He advocated for the belief that all persons have an inherent dignity. All persons. He embraced the spirit with which President Kennedy signed the Community Mental Health Center's Act, especially the accessibility of community mental health centers for individuals and families living in urban, economically distressed environments. Although colleagues asked him for years, "Why are you still at Dixwell Newhallville," he is more moved by the question that has arisen with his departure, "You love Dixwell Newhallville; how could you leave?" Robert is also exceptionally proud to have lived the clinical social work value of integrating theoretical constructs of human behavior and functioning with everyday practice in underserved communities. The agency has trained hundreds of social workers, bringing compassion and recovery to thousands of individuals.
