Associate Professor Robert Parkes is Convenor of the HERMES History Education Research Network, concentrated at The University of Newcastle; Founding Editor-in-Chief of Historical Encounters: A Journal of Historical Consciousness, Historical Cultures, and History Education; a member of the Editorial Board and former Editor-in-Chief of Agora / Sungråpho; an original Core Author for Public History Weekly; Founding Co-Convenor of the History and Education Special Interest Group within the Australian Association for Research in Education (AARE); and a member of the Academic Advisory Board of the International Society for History Didactics (ISHD). In 2013 he was Visiting Research Fellow with the Educational History and History Didactics group in the Department of Historical, Philosophical, and Religious Studies at Umeå University, Sweden. At the University of Newcastle he has served for a decade in School governance, including multiple terms of office as Deputy Head of School (2008-2011, 2015-2018), and two years as Acting Head of School (2018-2020). His research interests include: epistemic reflexivity, history teaching, and history teacher education; historical discourse, historical culture, and self-formation; and curriculum history, theory and politics. He also has an interest in martial arts training as a form of bildung (self-formation).
