My career as BBC correspondent was marked by leadership in covering key global issues, including the tide of obesity and metabolic diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease, climate change, equality in education, and upheavals in religion such as the growth of secularity, rifts within churches over sexuality and the role of women, and sexual abuse by priests. I led teams in difficult conditions in a variety of countries, secured funding, managed budgets, and produced reports under extreme pressure. Reported live including lead stories on flagship news shows.I have built on the knowledge of science and health I obtained with a Natural Sciences BA/MA at the University of Cambridge, with a MSc (with Distinction) in Clinical and Public Health Nutrition from University College London. My dissertation was on the role of long-chain omega 3 oils in inflammation.After moving to the United States where I have received Permanent Resident status (a Green Card), I gained industry experience through marketing and development with Better Biotics, a start-up providing carbohydrate fibres (prebiotics) to people with inflammation identified through stool samples.I currently work as Adjunct Professor teaching biomedical science, health policy and comparative health care systems and journalism in the College of Communication at DePaul University in Chicago. I am the founder and chief writer of HealthSpan, with news and investigation of medical science for those aiming for a longer healthy lifespan (www.health-span.org). HealthSpan focuses on diet, exercise, stress and sleep and their role in adding healthy years to lives.I have developed additional skills in researching, writing, and editing academic and scientific papers. My current interests focus on nutrition and preventive health, the gut microbiome, diabetes, obesity and the metabolic syndrome, and the role of inflammation in health and disease.
