As an On Plant Veterinary Officer (OPVO) with the Australian Department of Agriculture, Water and Environment I operate in partnership with Australian export meat processors. I have provided services to numerous livestock establishments processing beef, pigs, game species, solipeds, buffalo and sheep throughout QLD, NSW and the NT. My core duties include maintaining and verifying compliance with export legislation, providing and supervising ante- and post-mortem, working with processors to improve their performance while performing disease, welfare and residue surveillance and collection. I am now based at Kilcoy Pastoral Company, the largest prime grainfed beef producer in Australia.

The Emergency Centre for Transboundary Animal Diseases (ECTAD) works with governments in preventing and controlling emerging infectious and zoonotic diseases by working closely with national and international stakeholders in the animal production and health sector.

Engage via values-driven communication to build awareness and understanding of sustainable and best practice red meat production and consumption. This is facilitated through public appearances, media and social media to drive positive engagement with consumers around food production.

Offering veterinary consultant services to meat processors, food producers and livestock enterprise in auditing, verification, systems development and training.

My role was expansive and encompassed a high volume of work. I was responsible for providing leadership and technical oversight to the Meat Exports Branch, European Union Cattle Accreditation Scheme (EUCAS) team and the Operational Integrity team. My role included policy formation and responsibility for matters concerning overseas market access including audit preparation and responses to foreign governments. I also provided legislative and administrative advice and input on strategic direction. Additionally, I chaired recruitment panels, coordinated an Innovation Challenge and represented the department’s Exports Division on the Australian Emergency Animal Disease Preparedness (EADP) panel and on the national Animal Health Committee with the national and state Chief Veterinary Officers. Further experience was gained coordinating responses to food safety issues, animal welfare incidents relating to the processing of game species and livestock as well as organising and representing the department and Exports Division at industry and inter-governmental meetings. I took secondment to the Live Animal Exports branch where I acted as an Independent Observer on livestock export vessels to audit and report on the welfare of livestock at sea (see Career Accomplishments & Projects).

Providing official verification and assurance to Australian export meat processing establishments / abattoirs throughout Queensland, New South Wales and the Northern Territory covering beef and mutton and game species such as kangaroos, boars and deer.

I created and developed a prototype mobile phone application (app) for livestock stakeholders throughout New Zealand to promote the transport of stock that is fit for purpose and compliant within the relevant animal welfare and industry legislation. This was further developed as a key strategy with MPI in coordination with industry partners including the New Zealand Veterinary Association, DairyNZ, Beef and Lamb NZ and Deer Industry NZ, Federated Farmers, Road Transport Association and the Livestock Transporters Forum. The app was presented to the Minister for Primary Industries at the CEO Animal Welfare Forum in April 2017 and is available for download on the Google Play and Apple iTunes stores.

My role as a Regional Coordinator extended upon my core role as a Veterinary Technical Supervisor. I worked with MPI Verification Services management and front line verifiers to facilitate national consistency and objectivity in applying animal welfare standards. I also worked with stakeholders throughout animal industries to promote a greater knowledge and uptake of welfare requirements including the development of digital solutions (e.g. Fit for Transport App - see Career Accomplishments).

As an Official Veterinarian with the New Zealand Government I perform numerous roles. With livestock processor I am responsible for inspecting animals on premises to ensure they're are fit for the intended purposes, ensuring animal welfare protocols are followed, and providing export certification for the resulting products. I also over-view post mortem inspection, audit on site food safety programmes, liaise with the company over any issues and the assist with the implementation of recommendations. I also provide verification services in a circuit role to operations requiring less-than full time services (for example rendering, hides and skins, honey, butchers, transport operators and various export approved premises) and assist with animal welfare strategy implementation at the national level.Core services I deliver working for the NZ Ministry for Primary Industries include:- Verification services: verify the implementation of operator Risk Management Programmes (RMP), Food Safety Programmes and Market Access Requirements.- Certification/Official Assurances: issue official assurances for: Animal products processed as Animal Products Officer (under the Animal Products Act 1999) and the Food Act 1981 as a NZ Official Veterinarian.- Animal Welfare: Animal Welfare Inspector (under the Animal Welfare Act 1999)- Accredited QMS Lead Auditor: AS/NZS ISO 9001:2008 Quality Management Systems- Accredited under Unit standard 8084 – Audit quality management systems for compliance with quality standards- Accredited under HACCP Application Unit Standard 19514
