About Robert Ryan

Red meat is critical to human nutrition and economic development as an accessible, affordable and sustainable protein. Meat is a natural and nutrient dense food while the red meat industry in conjunction with livestock production is also responsible for significant contributions to GDP. Rob is dedicated to safeguarding the provision of animal products and exceeding expectations in their primary production, processing and supply chain. He has enjoyed success working with stakeholders throughout the system to solidify and improve market access whilst incorporating workability, integrity and social licence in producing animal based commodities.With experience in livestock and poultry production in Australia and New Zealand, Rob has understanding in the processing of beef, poultry, pigs, deer, game meat (kangaroos, deer and boars), smallstock (bobby calves, sheep and lambs), solipeds (donkeys and horses) and buffalo. Rob has also worked in partnership with a variety of other agricultural stakeholders including industry bodies, transporters and processors of honey, pet food, rendering, hides and skins and game trophies (taxidermists). As an Industry Fellow at the University of Queensland, an MLA Red Meat Industry Ambassador, and Examiner for the Australasian Veterinary Boards Council, Rob continues to cultivate consumer awareness and educate industry professionals in agriculture and meat production.

I was responsible for providing leadership and technical oversight to the Meat Exports Branch, European Union Cattle Accreditation Scheme (EUCAS) team and the Operational Integrity team. My role included policy formation and responsibility for matters concerning overseas market access including audit preparation and responses to foreign governments. I also provided legislative and administrative advice and input on strategic direction. Additionally, I chaired recruitment panels, coordinated an Innovation Challenge and represented the department’s Exports Division on the Australian Emergency Animal Disease Preparedness (EADP) panel and on the national Animal Health Committee with the national and state Chief Veterinary Officers. Further experience was gained coordinating responses to food safety issues, animal welfare incidents relating to the processing of game species and livestock as well as organising and representing the department and Exports Division at industry and inter-governmental meetings. I took secondment to the Live Animal Exports branch where I acted as an Independent Observer on livestock export vessels to audit and report on the welfare of livestock at sea (see Career Accomplishments & Projects).

    I created and developed a prototype mobile phone application (app) for livestock stakeholders throughout New Zealand to promote the transport of stock that is fit for purpose and compliant within the relevant animal welfare and industry legislation. This was further developed as a key strategy with MPI in coordination with industry partners including the New Zealand Veterinary Association, DairyNZ, Beef and Lamb NZ and Deer Industry NZ, Federated Farmers, Road Transport Association and the Livestock Transporters Forum. The app was presented to the Minister for Primary Industries at the CEO Animal Welfare Forum in April 2017 and is available for download on the Google Play and Apple iTunes stores.
