As the regional Director of Business Development for L3's Advanced Communications Segment, I am responsible for the early identififcation of new business opportunities within the Communications realm, and for leading L3's strategic capture campaigns covering both Defence and Commercial programs throughout Australia and New Zealand. My primary focus is on leading the continued growth of L3's local C5ISR design, development and engineering facilities, however the position also allows me the opportunity to identify, initiate and coordinate emergent business opportunities across the full spectrum of L3's Sensor, Areospace and Electronic Systems portfolios. Suffice to say that my days are full.

As the Principal Marine Surveyor - Port State Control, I was responsible for managing stakeholder engagement with regard AMSA's international commitments with the merchant shipping community in relation to Regulatory compliance and Safety management. The role required ongoing liaison with a wide spectrum of national and international commercial and Government bodies, and was responsible for the managerial oversight of AMSA's field office ship inspection operations across some 74 different locations. I was the Australian point of contact for our ongoing membership of the differing international Port State Control Memorandum of Understanding communities (Paris MOU, Tokyo MOU, Indian Ocean MOU etc.), responsible for identifying and coordinating AMSA's preferred response to emergent International Maritime Organisation initiatives and concerns.

I was responsible for the real-time scheduling, oversight and operations management of the Royal Australian Navy's Fleet, along with a concurrent responsibility for programming Fleet operations, maintenance periods and international exercise commitments out to a five year period.

I was responsible for the day to day planning, management and execution of naval operations for the Combined Maritime Force (CMF), including Force Apportionment, Rules of Engagement application, Task Matrix Assignment, Regional Engagement, Counter Piracy Policy Development, Regional Training, Logistic Support, Public relations, and Personnel Management. I was responsible for the ongoing negotiation of international force commitments, and liaison and deconfliction of ongoing operations over an area of some 2.5M square miles of ocean.

I championed the development of several ongoing Research and Development tasks, again identifying funding sources and sponsorship of these projects through the Departmental and Government Committee system.

Oversaw the preparation and execution of a wide reaching review of the Australian Military Justice System, including an extensive program of stakeholder engagement and interviews, covering a broad swarth of the Australian Legal system. The task included the preparation and publication of the Review findings for Government consideration and subsequent public release.

Held the duties and responsibilities as the subject matter expert and commander of the Royal Australian Navy's, Damage Control and Shipboard Administration team. The role involved a very heavy emphasis on 'Sea Riding' and moving from ship to ship evaluating standards and training ship's crews with regard extant damage control procedures and techniques. The role also involved performing the staff function as the Fleet Commander's principle advisor for damage control administrative oversight and reference publication. As the 2IC of the RAN's Sea Training Group, I was the staff administrator and mentor for a number of very senior and experienced Navy personnel, looking to their professional development and career management.

Hmas Anzac (Fleet Base West)

Acted as 2nd in Command of an Australian Major Fleet Unit, and on occasion acted in Command. Performed the myriad duties and responsibilities encompassing shipboard management and leadership across the diverse internal organisational structure of a modern warship. As the XO I was responsible for the good conduct, administration and welfare of the crew, ensuring that the wider management team coordinated and liaised in a holistic and deliberate fashion. The duty set included responsibility for shipboard maintenance, damage control, training, career management, technical reporting chains, external liaison, public affairs and long term planning.

Middle East

Acted as the principal maritme advisor to the deployed Australian Joint Force Commander in the Middle East Area of Operations (MEAO). The role was dual hatted alongside acting as the core Australian military planner embedded with USCENTCOM staff for combat operations in the MEAO.

Performed the role of subject matter expert and principle advisor to the Fleet Commander for all matters relevant to naval combat operations. The task encompassed a great deal of hands on training for the Fleet's various Anti-Submarine Warfare teams, moving from ship to ship either independently or as part of a larger Sea Training Group (STG) team. As the senior warfare officer within the STG team I also performed the duty of group operations officer, managing the administrative movements and training tasks for the rest of the Group. I additionally performed the duty of Divisional Officer for the Executive Branch officers and sailors within the Group.

Performed the duties of the Anti-Submarine Warfare staff instructor and Officer in Charge of the PWO Faculty. The role encompassed daily interaction with staff and students, lesson planning and delivery, alignment and deconflcition of student and staff movements and career management, review and development of naval tactical techniques and procedures.

Hma Ships Swan And Canberra

Performed the duties as the on-watch Principal Warfare Officer, Operations Officer, and Anti-Submarine Warfare subject matter expert in HMA Ships Swan and Canberra. Duties included the full gamut of real-time watchkeeping in a warships operations room (including weapons and sensor management and control, the conduct of military operations and exercise, communications management, implementation of Rules of Engagement, implementation of Maritime Interception Operations etc), acted as the Divisional Officer (personnel line manager) for the Combat System Divison, fulfilled the role of Short-Mid-Long term planning Officer, international liasion Officer, Part of Ship Officer (shipboard maintenance management), and 'Mate of the Upperdeck' (Officer in Charge of Seamanship and the ship's Upperdeck appearance).

Hma Ships Geraldton, Torrens, Stuart, And Derwent

Performed the roles and functions, and enjoyed the heck out of being, a junior Officer aboard a number of different RAN Fleet Units. Duties included navigation and seamanship, leadership and personnel management, departmental administration and reporting, accounting and logistic planning (as the ship's 'Beer Officer'), Explosives Custodian management and accounting, and shipboard maintenance oversight. Operations included Fisheries Protection, international engagement, military exercises, underwater maintenance (Scuba Diving), Explosive Demolitions, Cryptographic Control, Helicopter Control, Boarding Party and small boat operations.

Acted as the On Watch crew commander for a joint Australian/American satellite operations ground staff. Tasks included operational 'real-time' event reporting into the higher defence echelons of both the Australian and the United States Government, personnel management and training, post event analysis, monitoring satellite health and taking remedial actions when required.
