Lead Engineering Marine Engineer, assigned to HMS Forth as the Deputy Section Head of Electrical Distribution & Domestic Services, gave a unique opportunity to work with innovative technologies that had not been implemented before by the Royal Navy. The primary responsibilities as the Deputy Section Head involved maintaining/operating power and lighting across the ship via switchboards, electrical distribution centres and using monitor and surveillance systems; whilst also maintaining / operating domestic services such as galley 440V equipment, laundry 440v equipment and reverse Osmosis plants.The day to day role focused on managing the workload of a team of engineering technicians, upholding electrical safety, carrying out reactive and preventive maintenance, supporting industrial partners and assisting in the commissioning of systems.

Serving on ships from HMS Ironduke (type 23 frigate), to river class off-shore patrol vessels, has given exposure to a multitude of disciplines within the field of engineering. Daily work usually varied from electrical fault finding & defect rectification, planned preventive maintenance tasks to watch keeping, which consisted of monitoring running machinery & maintaining tank levels.Once established as an experienced Engineering Technician, there was opportunity to take on more responsibility; this involved a level of maintenance management and carrying out periodic tests on a range of systems, all while ensuring associated logs were kept up to date
