My current role at Findaway World expands the freedom I have to innovate and help define and create our next generation of products. In this role, I lead the design and direction to turn our digital products into a Software as a Service offering (http://www.audioengine.io). The AudioEngine SaaS product helps us expand our reach and lets us leverage our audio delivery platform and SDKs to enable other partners and companies to deliver audiobooks to their users.In this role I have also designed, and lead implementation for, the migration of our platform away from physical machines in datacenters to a cloud based presence. This lets us scale more seamlessly, deliver content from locations close to users, be impervious to hardware failures and streamlines our software deployment practices.As head of R&D I've lead a small team to think out of the box, and in an unconstrained way, develop new products. Our fail often and early mantra lets us iterate and understand problems quickly.

I was so lucky to be an early part of Findaway World's transition to offering digital products. In this role, I got to design and author the first versions of our audio delivery platform for one of the world's largest collection of audiobooks. This meant: * Designing and writing our scalable server side platform for audio delivery and the associated DRM that accompanies this audio. * writing a web based player client for our audio platform * writing Android and iOS based clients for audio delivery. * Ensuring our platform is highly available and scalable. * Leading a team - i both was directly responsible for, and then, worked along side a growing team of up to 16 that worked on our products. * Hiring - I interviewed and ultimately helped select all members of the digital team.Here I learned the best practices, solutions, and of course pitfalls, in offering a highly available, highly trafficked web based service. It was a great change after working on an embedded linux based consumer product. It helped develop a great big picture, full stack view of how things work - which is what drives me.

This was one of my favorite roles ever and helped me understand that, with enough dedication and determination, I can solve any problem. Findaway was gracious enough to hand me the reigns of all aspects of the software and firmware required for Playaway View (http://www.playaway.com/view).In this role, I got to cross a bunch of items off of my professional bucket list: * Roll a Linux based OS from scratch * Dive deep into the kernel: * wrote driver for the Freescale I.MX233 color space conversion pipeline * wrote a driver for the the LCD screen and ensured that it worked as a DirectFB framebuffer device * modified the sound driver to avoid pops and accidental playback when DAC buffers wheren't populated correctly (Thanks the open source Chumby Kernel for inspiration) * wrote driver for the button handling * wrote a full multithreaded video player application using the gstreamer pipeline and wrote a custom DirectFB rendering element for the pipeline. * Squeezed absolutely /every/ last element of performance out of this processor for this deviceThe product is an outstanding success - especially where I am concerned - It just works. Turn it on and it works.
