In collaboration with Instrumentation Laboratories, I developed a microfluidic bubble generator for the purpose of introducing bubbles of a certain size and number to one of their blood sample analyzers. This bubble generator was intended to determine the nature of the vulnerability of their device to the presence of microbubbles in blood samples.

I conducted research concerning the application of biodegradable silk coatings to deep-brain-stimulation electrodes. This involved the study of electrode coating methods and the resulting properties of coated electrodes including resistance, mechanical stiffness, and coating solubility.

The primary objective of the group I worked with was to assemble a model of neural bioelectric/growth response to direct electrical stimulation. I worked on silk processing and image analysis, creating silk films and scaffolds seeded with neural cells to model 3D and 2D tissue. I would then examine the confocal microscopy of the resulting tissue models to determine various morphological properties of the neurons.

My work involved the culture of embryonic chicken tendinocytes alongside various drug factors that affected cell cytoskeleton development. Following completion of the culture, I fixed the cells, stained them with fluorescent labels, and imaged the state of microtubule structures using confocal microscopy.
