About Robert Edward Washington, Iii
Although I graduated with a degree in art and art history, I was lucky to find my hidden talent for accounting early in my professional life. My first several jobs included bookkeeping tasks, such as the management of accounts payable and receivable, payroll processing, bank deposits, and budget development, and as I received on-the-job training from generous mentors, I also spent my own time pursuing more accounting education in the form of reading accounting textbooks and taking online classes. All my roles were at small-ish organizations, so my accounting duties naturally spilled over into operations, and I soon found myself doing office management alongside the accounting.Fast forward a bit to 2011, when I joined the Fair Labor Association (FLA) as a junior accountant. I continued handling basic accounting tasks but also began preparing financial statements for presentation to senior leadership. I was eventually promoted to Senior Accountant and developed and administered a comprehensive set of financial policies and procedures. But my biggest achievement here was initiating a sea change in the perception of the role of finance in a nonprofit. When I arrived, the finance team was more of an afterthought, a necessary but not particularly valued group of penny-pinching bill-payers. I was able to educate the organization into an understanding of and appreciation for the integral role of sound financial management in fulfilling the mission and meeting goals.I eventually left the FLA to join the Hearth, Patio, & Barbecue Association (HPBA) as a bookkeeper, but within two years found myself the Director - Finance & Operations. Here I feel key to the organization’s overall success, leveraging my combined accounting and operations skills and background to keep the HPBA on a budget and on target to meet its Board-designated goals. Most importantly, I secured a $1MM Paycheck Protection Program loan, enabling HPBA to continue operating and paying its staff.I genuinely enjoy accounting. I enjoy monitoring the books, and I’ve enjoyed the years of accounting learning I’ve acquired. However, I’ve been blessed to have employers who recognize the value of a self-taught education and are able to see my underlying passion and integrity. (After all, there are not many who read accounting textbooks in their free time.)Key strengths: Accounting; Nonprofit Operations Management; Integrity & Reliability; Strategic Planning; Process Improvement.Connect with me at rewthree@outlook.com.
