My primary research focused on the photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM) of optical antennas, waveguides, and photonic nanostructures, whose optical near-fields I endeavored to understand via comparative finite element analysis (COMSOL) and analytical models (Mathematica). This position required a broad skillset involving scientific proficiency and the frequent hands-on use and maintenance of a unique home-built system that combined electron and light optics, ultrafast lasers, high vacuum hardware, electronics, and software.In addition to my research, mentoring and advising graduate students was an important daily activity. My teaching duties were more limited in scope, but included lecturing Solid State Physics for Engineers and General Physics. I served on a number of MS and PhD committees.

I played the central role in the development of an aberration-corrected photoemission electron microscope (PEEM) designed by the late electron optics pioneer Gert Rempfer. The design is based around an electron mirror coupled to electrostatic optics and UV, Vis, and IR CW and ultrafast lasers. In this project I relied on a close and friendly team of scientists, engineers, and technicians.My subsequent research was focused on PEEM imaging and computer simulation of surface plasmons on metal nanostructures and light bound to thin film waveguides as well as transfer of energy between the two wave phenomena.Earlier projects included the design, fabrication, and characterization of hetero-junction UV-Vis LEDs and photovoltaic devices using polymers, ZnO nanowires, and CdSe quantum dots. We also published studies on measuring charge carrier mobility of semiconductor materials using optical techniques.
