Robert has spent over 23 years in the building design and construction industry focusing on 3D. At first working on renderings for public engagement and communication, and moving into “AEC smart objects” as the use of models started to grow in the design industry. As the US Army Corps of Engineers started requiring BIM on projects around 2008 Robert was quick to respond to their requirements. In the following years BIM-centric software such as Revit and Navisworks started growing in popularity and requirement, so again Robert adapted and became an early adopter of these programs. He helped lead the charge on design-build project coordination, standards development and technical training. He also spent several years as an on-line Revit instructor for students of diverse backgrounds and ability from around the world. From there Robert moved from the design side to the construction side at a large multi-disciplinary sub-contractor to lead their: templates, training, standards and coordination efforts. During which time he was critical in improving the existing detailing and shop workflow to take advantage of the then-new fabrication components in Revit to improve the overall efficiency. Robert also helped the company embrace some of the flourishing construction technology such as laser scanning, and move away from printed documents to digital. Robert joined Barton Malow and has again grown his skills in new and related technology, such as becoming a drone pilot, laser scanner expert, and BIM360/ACC Build champion. Robert has also worked closely with Penn State University’s BIM team to refine and improve their data hand-off standards for their Facilities Management team, no small task for one of the industry leaders in BIM use and standards and has become a champion of the rapidly growing AEC to FM (6D) coordination. Currently Robert oversees and provides direct training and support to numerous projects throughout Virginia, and the country.
