Profile bio

About Roberta Leiner

As an executive focused on underserved populations for many decades, I have helped develop a new orientation towards building community for all of those in need. I have been a change agent to envision, plan and implement bold new initiatives. One career highlight came as director of UJA Federation of New York’s Caring Commission when I acted decisively in the aftermath of the Great Recession. Working with the UJA-Federation of NY’s team, we expanded the focus from Jews in poverty to all Jews who became more vulnerable due to job loss, health crises, and other life changes. Another highlight was the creation of the Brooklyn Teen Pregnancy Network, which became the model for similar programs across New York.I have been a senior executive at UJA-Federation, Hudson River Health Care and other agencies of varying sizes, serving culturally, religiously and linguistically diverse populations. At each stage of my career, I have brought high-impact initiatives with a lasting impact to life. Besides having the required management skills, I am known as versatile problem solver. I work in a caring way to “weave” constituents, communities and coalitions together at many levels based on common interests. I empower staff and volunteers alike with the skills, knowledge and belief that they can effect change!I have had many powerful influences in my life, especially my father Rabbi Robert Marcus. One of the first outsiders to visit Buchenwald Death camp in 1945, Rabbi Marcus was instrumental in reclaiming and settling Jewish children and later advocating for the rights of all refugees. Ellie Wiesel was one of these children. Below is a link to a recent interview with me on Rabbi Marcus. To this day, the legacy of service resides deep within me. I am devoted to heal and mend brokenness and build caring communities for all.
