About Robert Bloom
My name is Robert Bloom and I am a highly experienced and accomplished software engineer. I came to be a full time software engineer by way of hardware where I successfully developed diagnostic software to resolve difficult hardware issues. I have helped companies succeed with products like Unix servers supporting hundreds of connected clients, devices that provide remote access to corporate networks, a combined IP router and voice gateway, and most recently embedded Linux smart grid communication nodes. I’ve been a Linux developer for quite some time, in particular, embedded Linux. I’ve written user space applications, worked inside the kernel, and developed a number of device drivers and modules that interface to microcontroller hardware. As I look at my many successful projects, I can say the following about my abilities as a software engineer: I can provide crucial guidance when creating software requirements from marketing and

Designed and implemented BPL modem firmware build environment to incorporate Ambient specific code. Designed and implemented the communication interface between Linux host routing software and the BPL (DS2/Marvel) network processor as well as the BPL modem initialization sequence. Designed and implemented the BPL firmware VLAN to port mapping interface and port management between the Ambient Linux host platform and the DS2 power line modem.Provided software development support for the Ambient integrated power supply board. Specific contributions include: Made major enhancements to control the regulated power supply control during initial device boot sequence. Designed and implemented boot fail-safe, boot stage indication, AC loss detection and reporting, backup power type detection and charging algorithm. Converted and enhanced the initial PIC 18F25K20 software design written in assembler to a PIC 18F46K20 in C. Provided software development support for several Ambient embedded Linux smart grid models. Over 130,000 Smart Grid models have been deployed in the Duke Energy grid. Specific contributions include: Designed and implemented Linux device driver modules for Analog Devices ADE7758 and 7880 energy metering chips. Designed and implemented a Linux driver module to interface with the integrated power supply board via I2C. This driver is used to report intelligent power supply board status, configure its parameters and report AC loss and node intrusion interrupts. Designed and implemented Linux host applications, api libraries, utilities and daemon processes for power quality measurement and intelligent power supply board configuration and monitoring. Designed and implemented Ambient’s first SQLite feature configuration database and supporting utilities.
