About Robert S.

Passionate about all things infrastructure related, I am currently a junior at Arizona State University studying Civil Engineering. I am currently a Pre-Doctoral Fellow at Purdue University, stationed at Utah State University, where I am working with the ASPIRE research center on dynamic wireless power transfer modules that will charge electric cars while in-motion. I am also the Battery Team Lead for Solar Devils, charged with designing a 5.5 kWh lithium-ion battery for a solar-powered race car to compete in the American Solar Challenge (ASC). Civil and Electrical Engineering are my two main passions.I enjoy working with others to problem solve, which has led me to many passions outside my major. Previously I obtained hands-on lab experience at the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth where I worked on research into non-aqueous redox-flow batteries. Chemistry, coding, computer hardware, and electrical circuits are not commonly associated with Civil Engineering, but I enjoy working with a team and am always open to learning and not afraid to seek guidance when needed.

  • Asu Solar Car Team
    Head Of Electrical Engineering
Asu Solar Car Team Aug 2024 - Present
    Tempe, Arizona, United States
As the Head of Electrical Engineering, I oversee and manage three sub-teams working on the battery, photovoltaic system, and system integration and train new members on the basics of electrical engineering. As a team, we are working in tandem with our mechanical and aerospace engineering teams to build ASU's first solar car in 30 years from the ground-up.
  • Solar Devils At Asu
    Battery Sub-Team Lead
Solar Devils At Asu Sep 2023 - Aug 2024
    Tempe, Arizona, United States
In this role, I led the design, stress-testing, and development of a lithium-ion battery pack for deployment in a solar powered race car that will race in the American Solar Challenge. The beating-heart of an electric car, the battery is the most scrutinized part of the vehicle.
  • Asu Solar Car Team
    Chair Of Events Committee
Asu Solar Car Team Feb 2024 - May 2024
    Tempe, Arizona, United States
Worked with event coordinators to set up multiple high-profile exhibitions for Solar Devils at events such as Electrify Expo Phoenix and ASU's Change the World, where we won Best Display.
  • Aspire Research Center
    Pre-Doctoral Follow
Aspire Research Center Jun 2024 - Jul 2024
    Logan, Utah, United States
Working under Dr. Hongjie Wong and PhD student Mckay Waite on testing a wireless power transfer module for embedded road deployment to charge electric vehicles in motion.I was allowed to develop my own research project, and laid the groundwork for a mobile DC fast charging hub that can be towed anywhere using a semi-tractor.
  • University Of Massachusetts Dartmouth
    Undergraduate Researcher
University Of Massachusetts Dartmouth Jun 2023 - Aug 2023
    Dartmouth, Massachusetts, United States
For the summer, I worked on a National Science Foundation project under Dr. Patrick Cappillino designing a non-aqueous redox flow battery. I proposed a study seeking to determine the viability of using phenyl-, methyl-, and fluorine mono substituted-HIDA electrolytes in redox-flow batteries. I worked alongside graduate students to synthesize all three ligand compounds, and characterized them using NMR, IR, and crystallography.
