About Robert Ward
A recent graduate, excited to learn industry practices to write reliable and efficient software that can be used as a problem-solving tool.Math and the Sciences always made me feel empowered because I knew the knowledge can be used to inform decisions, create something new, and solve problems. Computer Science specifically has such a wide range of applications from research and data analytics, outreach, to developing software. I had the fortune to begin exploring these applications through my recent work experiences:From Implementing a database for La Casita Cultural Center, a Latino community outreach program, I gained experience in managing a project from inception to implementation, communication to facilitate collaboration across technical and non-technical groups, and an understanding of impact to ensure my decisions serve La Casita’s needs.I have also participated in Network Stratification research, modeling social networks to find trends in dynamics that cause class division and inequality, which involved using knowledge from existing research, implementing algorithms into functioning programs, and understanding how my decisions influence the insight that can be obtained.Through my research internship at Columbia University, I had the chance to explore the field of Data Science with the project of making a website that visualizes how datasets are transformed through SQL queries. This experience required learning about the SQL execution process and data provenance, as well as user consideration with how these transformations would best be understood by potential learners. As a Salvadoran-born American citizen who grew up in Thailand, cross-cultural interactions were part of my daily experience. I became intrigued in understanding the differences and similarities of cultures, as well as the causes and possible solutions to global issues, notably the disparities in quality of life and the environment. I hope to use Computer Science as a problem-solving tool for creative projects and global issues.I look forward to continuing these works, and seeking out more opportunities to use Computer Science to create with impact.
