I'm a software engineering leader with a focus on scale, organizational excellence, and cultural transformation. I'm currently leading software development at MacStadium, a cloud services provider specialized in Mac hardware, with a kube-native virtualization product we call Orka.I have over 15 years of experience helping to raise the bar in engineering teams all over the US, and worldwide in places like Poland, the Philippines, the Ukraine, and China. I've socialized best practices in version control, build and release management, testing, and architecture everywhere I go.At Wikia (now Fandom), a top 20 US site, I transformed a broken search functionality that served 10% of its page views from a major problem to best-in-class relevance and performance. This delivered business value by improving user engagement, and removing issues resulting in site abandonment. As a founding member of Lookout's enterprise backend team, I proudly pushed the button on our successful GA deploy. During my time at Lookout I had a key role in architecture and leading the build-out of an SOA designed for high scale and enterprise-level uptime requirements. At GE I led a team working to build a high-scale, highly configurable multi-tenant platform for the enforcement of policies before cloud compliance becomes a problem. We used and socialized novel technologies that helped to influence modern best practices at one of the world's oldest technology companies. At UserTesting, I helped a great company find a new inflection point in its business by focusing on software architecture, infrastructure, strategy, and scale. The processes I introduced anticipated and facilitated a successful IPO in November 2020.At Vultr, I scaled an engineering organization from 15 to 50, helping to modernize and expand the capabilities and product line of an independent cloud provider.I'm a restless guy who loves solving problems, and likes to know how everything works.

Chief TechnologistSelf-Employed Sep 2010 - Present***Not presently taking new clients***I do some extra work in my spare time for fun. It's a good way to get experience in other technologies than the one in your 9-5. I work with clients to identify a specific business need, outline the technologies needed to meet that need, develop, design, and scope an application architecture, and execute on that plan.Over the last couple of years I've been using Upwork for handling much of my business, but I'm always open to starting a discussion through LinkedIn, too. You can check out my profile on Upwork here: https://www.upwork.com/o/profiles/users/_~0100dd1b21e0776ace/I have several years of continued experience legal discovery space. This includes running large-scale Map/Reduce jobs over data in discovery, and building an end-to-end, multi-server analytics app using Python, Django, Celery, Solr, Redis, and RabbitMQ, deployed and orchestrated using Docker.I've transferred some of my expertise in Solr to an eight-part video series through Packt Publishing. You can learn more about it at http://www.packtpub.com/getting-started-with-apache-solr-search-server/video.I worked with http://www.earmilk.com, a music blog, for about a year. I implemented an in-browser music player functionality and helped troubleshoot issues with a Zend Framework app sitting on top of a WordPress database.I was also the recipient of integration funding from MailChimp for adding mailing list functionality to PHPPOS, a free, open-source point of sale system. Senior Director Of EngineeringVultr Feb 2022 - Feb 2024West Palm Beach, Florida, UsLed an organization of 40+ engineers ranging from the bottom of the stack to the very top. The responsibilities of teams under my purview include:* DevOps, SRE, and Configuration Automation* UI/UX Development* Customer VM Provisioning Automation* Account Management & Billing* Test Automation* Cloud Native / Managed ServicesMajor accomplishments during my time here include:* Hired over 20 engineers, more than doubling the size of the organization, and introducing interviewing and onboarding processes to ensure the success of those new hires* Artifact-driven release process including database migrations* Robust change control process with approval flow for any manual changes to production infrastructure* A successful engineering reorg informed by the mapping of engineering domains to individuals and teams. Over time, some of these teams have gone as far as to grow into their own units comprised of smaller teams.* Learning from our challenges by introducing a blameless post-mortem process* Improving communication by adopting planning meetings for individual teams, with monthly reviews for the major teams and a monthly all hands to communicate status and pass-downs more broadly, and a quarterly planning process to make timelines more predictable* Quality improvements driven by the addition of test automation, ephemeral environments, and a stronger emphasis on testing* Significant increase in new-business revenue by supporting major partnerships* Invested in our teams with the development of a leveling rubric for engineers, education around unit testing and design patterns, themed months to help increase awareness of tech debt, security, and observability, and the encouragement of the utilization of education reimbursement -
Director Of EngineeringUsertesting May 2019 - Feb 2022Los Gatos, California, UsI joined UserTesting to help lend my expertise during a common inflection point: the scaling of both engineering teams and the products they offer. During my time, I have helped to lead interest groups around architecture, GraphQL, SOA, and documentation. I have also led the charge on evaluating, selecting, and integrating with an Identity as a Service vendor.Since my start, we've gone from being staunchly anti-documentation to holding documentation-focused hackathons. We've adopted GraphQL as our internal standard for future APIs to improve our SOA readiness. I also helped to scale our Ops & Infrastructure team from a single person to international team spanning multiple time zones, and helped develop a foundational subgroup including our Internal Tools team. This subgroup worked together to help deliver functionality like support for usage-based pricing via pub/sub and the introduction of a new service, as well as data residency. These two projects drastically widened our sales funnel and increased our overall market opportunity.Lately, I've been growing our teams and managing negotiations with vendors and strategic partners. Our understanding of where we are and where we're going has evolved rapidly, and the future for UT is brighter than it's ever been! -
