I am a specialist in operational applications and services of Earth Observation and remote sensing for environmental monitoring and mapping – specialising in agriculture and land cover/land use, with many years of international experience working in English, Spanish and French. I worked from 1989 to 2022 in Earth Observation and Geographic Information for agriculture and environmental monitoring. Previously I worked in West Africa, starting in 1982, in agricultural development and rangeland projects.I have been responsible for both technical project management and international programme management; working in application and demonstration projects, as well as delivering and managing technical training in Earth Observation and GIS. My experience is both in the UK and as part of international development and cooperation programmes, particularly in West Africa and South America. Seconded to Agip KCO in Atyrau for a Remote Sensing Data and Value Added Services programme within the development of the Kashagan offshore oilfield in the northern Caspian Sea. Leading the development of value added uses of satellite imagery, in particular ice charting using near real time satellite radar data to support shipping operations, and infrastructure mapping using high resolution optical data.

As a natural resource consultant specialising in the applications of satellite imagery for international development, my work included developing the first digital mapping workflow in the company. Projects I managed in Algeria and Yemen showed the benefit of combining the coverage of Earth Observation satellites with specialist knowledge in ground survey. Maps presented information at ministerial level on the location, extent and nature of natural resources over large areas.

University College of North Wales – Centre for Arid Zone Studies, Bangor, UK; in co-operation with ACORD, Gao, Mali.I conducted field survey on rangeland resources for Taureg nomadic pastoralists, which advanced the knowledge of dry season grazing practices of pastoralists, information used by the NGO ACORD in developing pastoral wells. I collected wet season biomass data, which was used with satellite weather data on a Sahel wide basis to research its capability for assessing rangeland resources.
