Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Working in English and French as part of the Programme Coordination Team of the Monitoring for Environment and Security for Africa (MESA) programme, based at the African Union in Addis Ababa and funded by the EU. MESA is increasing access to Earth Observation (EO) information in Africa, and has developed services in themes related to the land and marine environment, climate and food security throughout sub-Saharan Africa, implemented through 7 regional implementation centres in Kenya, Mauritius, Botswana, DR Congo, Ghana and Niger. Technical cooperation with the EU Joint Research Centre and EUMETSAT.Responsible for: technical coordination in development of EO services, supervising the supply of infrastructure including satellite receiving and processing stations, developing the capacity building and training strategy and supervising its implementation through a contractor, organising and leading technical expert meetings, and for development of the bi-annual continental environmental bulletin. Additionally, responsible for translation of major documents from English into French and Portuguese.

Member of the Operational Support Team for emergency mapping, and leading the technical group for data management.

Seconded to Agip KCO in Atyrau for a Remote Sensing Data and Value Added Services programme within the development of the Kashagan offshore oilfield in the northern Caspian Sea. Leading the development of value added uses of satellite imagery, in particular ice charting using near real time satellite radar data to support shipping operations, and infrastructure mapping using high resolution optical data.

Consultancy in geographic information analysis and data management (GIS): agricultural monitoring using satellite/aerial imagery, GPS mapping, contract work for local government. I regularly delivered training courses in ArcGIS and ERDAS Imagine for ESRI (UK) as an ESRI Authorised Instructor.

As Project Manager I was responsible for implementing a nationwide Highway Planning GIS at the Highways Agency in Argentina, enabling engineers to visualise information geographically for the first time. The project was instrumental in producing nationwide geospatial databases in collaboration with the national mapping agency.HTSPE was previously known as Hunting Technical Services.

I managed projects that explored practical applications for using satellite imagery in agricultural and environmental monitoring, in particular all-weather radar imagery. As part of Earth Observation demonstration programmes of the British National Space Centre and the European Commission, I presented results of this work at conferences and in publications. I developed operational techniques for updating environmental maps, rapid mapping of floods, monitoring deforestation in cloudy areas, and for crop area estimation; which have been adopted in the UK, Paraguay and Malaysia.

As a natural resource consultant specialising in the applications of satellite imagery for international development, my work included developing the first digital mapping workflow in the company. Projects I managed in Algeria and Yemen showed the benefit of combining the coverage of Earth Observation satellites with specialist knowledge in ground survey. Maps presented information at ministerial level on the location, extent and nature of natural resources over large areas.

Gao, Mali

University College of North Wales – Centre for Arid Zone Studies, Bangor, UK; in co-operation with ACORD, Gao, Mali.I conducted field survey on rangeland resources for Taureg nomadic pastoralists, which advanced the knowledge of dry season grazing practices of pastoralists, information used by the NGO ACORD in developing pastoral wells. I collected wet season biomass data, which was used with satellite weather data on a Sahel wide basis to research its capability for assessing rangeland resources.

Working in a World Bank funded integrated rural development project in Kano State as a VSO volunteer, I supervised adaptive crop research in the wet season, and the development of vegetable irrigation techniques in the dry season.
