My professional journey has encompassed roles as a Tradesperson, Leading Hand, Production Manager, General Manager, and CEO. From a young age, I demonstrated a keen interest in making, showcasing creativity and resourcefulness by constructing everything from billy-carts to lawnmower-powered scooters and crafting crystal radios to CB transceivers from repurposed old TVs. Throughout my life, I have actively participated in numerous special interest groups within electronics, radio, astronomy, and science, contributing as a founding member of Dorkbot Adelaide, Hackerspace Adelaide, and Makerspace Adelaide.Despite facing the challenges of dyslexia, my unwavering passion for electronics, science, and making has created diverse employment opportunities. Commencing as an apprentice electrical fitter in custom high-power electrical equipment, I progressed into the electronics industry and assumed various leadership roles. My commitment to social justice and disability advocacy became integral to my professional life, playing a pivotal role in an international research project that established Australia's first social enterprises. Upon relocating to South Australia, I established several successful social enterprises spanning graphic design, open employment, product manufacture, and electronics recycling.

Starting with a small workshop, growing it into a viable social enterprise that employed over 200 people across five unique divisions. SA Group Enterprises Inc. ran at a surplus for many years from its commercial activity, without any fundraising or charity. It was only until problems began with NTCRS in 2013 did this change. Twice winner of the National Disability Excellence Award in 2008 and 2009. For our graphic design business Inprint Design, the first social enterprise of its kind in the world. Then again for our design of assistive technologies to increase participation in our manufacturing business. During 20 years, I grew the businesses, operating in such diverse areas as steel manufacturing, graphic design, employment services for the deaf, an enclave within a pathology laboratory, a magazine publication, a computer retail business, and then in 2008, we established SA's first e-waste recycling social enterprises Aspitech (now called ERA).In 2012 with the introduction of the National TV & Computer Recycling Scheme Aspitech became SA's largest e-waste facilities processing 300 tons each month. Sadly, only two years later, the national scheme collapsed when the then-federal government failed to ensure sufficient industry funding to keep pace with growing community demand. What followed was an overnight industry collapse nationally, as collections were delayed, diverted, sent interstate to landfill or stockpiled. Resulting in many businesses across Australia closing as their supply of e-waste evaporated. After leading an intense media campaign, we persuaded the federal government to address the failures of the NTCRS. https://web.archive.org/web/20141206040640/http://www.sage.org.au/ Show less
