After graduating from the University of Dundee in Scotland, Robert took up his first permanent role as a Software Engineer at BAE Systems (Military Aircraft Division), Warton, Lancashire. This involved reverse engineering and programming / coding in multiple high and low-level languages to implement bespoke software for computer-aided engineering (CAE), computer-aided design (CAD) & computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) information systems used by design and production-line colleagues.He then took up academic posts - research assistant and lecturer - at Lancaster University (working for Prof Ian Sommerville), Manchester University (working for Prof Paul Layzell), Liverpool John Moores University, Bournemouth University, and University of Westminster. He currently works at University of Roehampton London.Robert is interested in all aspects of the development & research of information systems, including software engineering in 'Cloud'​, 'Big Data'​, social media, business and education settings, including database, data warehousing, data mining, and knowledge management aspects. He has taught these subjects using various relational (CODASYL) and object-oriented database management systems, including Oracle and Microsoft.Information systems'​ software maintenance and evolution, including program comprehension are a continuing interest of his, especially for large-scale legacy / hub systems which are coded using more than one language, including assembler, RTL2, COBOL, FORTRAN, C, and object-oriented languages, including Smalltalk and C++.Robert is also interested in software change management in information systems and its effects on organisational software development processes, including safety-critical avionic systems.His teaching includes: business research methods, business organisations in the global economy, project management / PRINCE2, Adobe Creative Suite, business intelligence: data warehousing & mining, information systems & software engineering.
