Erols was acquired by RCN. Joined the R&D team at RCN, a Cable Overbuilder and CLEC. Proposed, designed and managed a comprehensive review of the entire RCN Network (voice, video and data). Findings noted deficiencies and recommended corrective actions, leading to improvements in customer experience and satisfaction with service.Provided guidance to MegaCable (largest cable operator in Mexico) on international connectivity and use of Content Distribution Networks (CDNs). Advised RCN's Video Product Group on evaluation of video on demand (VOD) servers with regard to disk storage, OS and security issues. Provided technology analysis of potential investment opportunities and new lines of business. Uncovered a fraudulent offering prior to company investment, protecting company from financial loss. Investigated high rate of modem failures due to lightning. Uncovered improper craft practices by RCN and other utilities. Coordinated with modem manufacturer and protective-semiconductor manufacturers. Modem vendor proposed a redesign of their product to protect against common-mode surge events. Project manager for a BPON Fibert To The Home (FTTH) technology trial. Numerous FTTH equipment suppliers shaped their designs based on feedback provided to them. Member of the RCN delegation to Vulcan Ventures resulting in Paul Allen's $1.65B investment in RCN. Analyzed real world throughput provided to data customers. Found fault in an upstream provider's backbone, need for re-design of the LAN/MAN in some RCN markets; enabling the roll-out of MegaModem; evaluated IOPS performance of Sun SBUS SCSI using a solid state disk (SSD) as the target, results shared with Sun Marketing motivating change from SBUS to PCI, designed Sun HW configurations for optimal support of applications, tuned Solaris, reducing hardware costs. Customized ping program to detect packet-reordering. Ran IPERF throughput to GigE server at Pittsburgh Super Computer Center.
