Manager of the Technical Services Test Lab at Clemson University International Center for Automotive Research (CUICAR) in Greenville South CarolinaAs the Test lab manager I was responsible for providing comprehensive test support to our internal and external customers ensuring test integrity and TS 16949 compliance. The complexity and dynamic nature of testing requires that I consider priorities on a daily bases and that I maintain a consistent line of communication with the test lab associates and our customers. Typically testing is subtasks within a larger overall project thus meeting deadlines are critical for project progression. Within the testing subtask there are further subtasks involving tooling, test sample inspection and the execution and control of the test while it is in progress. Using my project managing skills I able to improve our testing on time delivery from 70% to over 95%.Budget management is a critical metric within any company and I was able to achieve budget compliance on my controllable cost elements. As a service department with the company we charged for the services provided our internal customers. In order for our internal customer to manage the funds provided I implemented a transparent system reporting the tooling and technician time cost on each request or project updated weekly.On the corporate level I was able t o achieve a 98% safety compliance rating and had no reportable OHSA injuries. I assigned one of the associates the task of being the safety coordinator and had monthly safety meetings.I was responsible for the management of over 300 quality documents, procedures and forms governing the operation of the test lab. I established a Project plan to review the documents over the course of each year to ensure compliance and adherence to the standards established

In his role I was leading the organizations direction for metrology activity on a global bases. I travel extensively in the America’s, Europe and Asia. A very strong network of talented associates including those involved in inspection, quality and manufacturing activities supported me. I worked closely with manufacturing engineers to understand the manufacturing process, which effected the dimensional, and stability of the inspection results. In conjunction with the manufacturing associates I also worked closely with the applications engineers to understand the critical form, fit and functional attributes. Conjoining these two disciplines into a product that can be manufactured and is functional superior required strong collaboration and teamwork. I am a strong believer in teamwork with strong leadership providing the overall strategy. In this position the business strategy was provided and I was empowered to coordinate the global teams required to execute on the strategy. I established small teams on a global bases according to product line, metrology discipline and quality requirements. The teams established according a certain charter would get together monthly in a net-meeting format and twice a year for face-to-face meetings. Our meeting and reporting structure was similar to ASME and ISO format. I was able to meet and learn about new people and cultures and the diversity within the global community. I wanted my family especially my children to learn the importance of having a global perspective. We got involved in a foreign exchange student program. We have host many students from various countries involving the following: Germany (1), France (2), Sweden (2), and Russia (1). It has been interesting experience for us all benefiting both the family and the student.

In this role I was able progress from Test Lab Technician to Metrology and Technical Services Manager. As an intrinsically motivated person worked my way though night school while working full receiving my Bachelors and Masters Degree during the course of my employment. The progression in my academic advancement was complemented with upward progress in my professional career. In the position of the Metrology and Tech Services Manager I able to produce progressive, innovative and customer focused results. As a subject matter expert in several metrology disciplines I was involved in production, warranty, quality, performance and design issues. I travel nationally and internationally to address manufacturing issues as they related to product performance and/or cost improvement studies. I understood the management of resources both human and equipment. I conjunction was some I my key suppliers I developed a measurement system which reduced brake rotor measurement from 10 minutes to 2 minutes and used batch processing for data summation. I also reduced the inspection of surface finish by 50%. My most significant accomplishment was the conception, development and implementation of a system called M.O.V.E. (Metrology On Vehicle Evaluation) The MOVE system was a unique system, which allowed collection of data on a brake rotor while driving down the road, It was also flexible enough used to collect data final vehicle assembly plants, warranty centers and service centers at dealerships. The MOVE system then evolved into a smaller hand held unit, which in October 2008 was awarded a patent. The instrument is now call Brakeview and is commercially available at brakeview.com.
