I coordinate a theoretical-experimental laboratory with a main focus on engineering novel protein-based vaccines, therapeutics and diagnostic markers for viral infectious diseases. Synthetic proteins are developed through the use computational biology tools along with massively parallel computer simulations and subsequently produced in laboratory. Over the last decade, these synthetic proteins, peptides and biomimetics have been used to capture antibodies from patient sera (HIV-1, DENV, ZIKV, SARS-CoV-2), to elicit antibody production in vitro (HIV-1), to validate vaccine efficacy in vivo as well as to neutralize viral infections (ZIKV) and used in serosurvey studies on flaviviruses (ZIKV, DENV and CHIKV). In addition, I act as the local coordinator of the ZIKAlliance consortium, an initiative involving 52 institutions in Europe and Latin-America. The consortium seeks to identify socio-economic and immunological factors of susceptibility to the severe form of zika. I am also member of the Fiocruz COVID-19 Genomic Surveillance Network and coordinator of the Protein Technology/Proteomics Platform Facility of the Aggeu Magalhães Institute at the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation. Taken together, my research portfolio addresses questions of medical relevance for public health and attempts to develop technological solutions to mitigate these issues.
