I am an experienced software product owner, technical architect and delivery team manager, with expertise in complex event processing (CEP), enterprise messaging, capital markets and the Internet of Things. I have worked extensively in both startup and enterprise vendor environments.Since 2019 I am responsible for a cross-functional team with a mission to accelerate the execution of Software AG's Internet of Things strategy. We work alongside the teams developing the Cumulocity core product to enhance the performance, scalability and resilience of the IoT platform.Following the acquisition of the Apama business from Progress Software by Software AG in 2013, I continued to run the R&D teams delivering the Apama Complex Event Processing and Apama Capital Markets Foundation products. Between 2015 and 2019 I was responsible for the development and delivery of Software AG's Universal Messaging product, the foundation of the Software AG Digital Business Platform.I joined Progress Software in 2005 when it acquired the Apama startup. While at Progress I moved from being an individual contributor on a product development team, to leading that team, and eventually to building and managing a world-class R&D team to develop a new line of Capital Markets Foundations, Solutions and Adapters based on the Apama technology.Prior to this, I joined Apama in 2000 when it was an early-stage startup. I worked on the development of Apama's revolutionary complex event processing technology and the application of that technology to the capital markets domain.Throughout my career I have always been in roles with a significant field and customer collaboration aspect, and focused on developing innovative technology to solve real customer business problems, rather than technology for its own sake.I hold a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of London, and Masters and Bachelors degrees in Computing and Mathematical Sciences from the University of Waikato.I am a dual New Zealand and UK citizen, currently living near Cambridge, UK.

Senior Director R&D (Iot & Analytics)Software Ag Feb 2019 - PresentDarmstadt, Hessen, DeI lead a UK-based team of software engineers and architects with a mission to accelerate the execution of Software AG's Internet of Things strategy. We work alongside the teams developing the Cumulocity core product and we have a particular focus on enhancing the performance, scalability and overall quality of the Cumulocity IoT platform. This is a new team created out of the Project Helix strategy refresh at Software AG in 2019. Our roles and responsibilities have evolved as the new strategy has developed. Currently active projects include rearchitecting inter-component communications in the platform to use a decoupled message streaming approach, customer use case driven performance optimisation, and continuous improvement to the devops processes and infrastructure that deliver Cumulocity into public and private cloud environments. -
Senior Director R&D (Universal Messaging)Software Ag Oct 2017 - Jan 2019Darmstadt, Hessen, DeFollowing a reorganisation of the Software AG IoT Analytics team to increase management focus in key product areas, I was responsible for the development and delivery of Universal Messaging, the messaging foundation for Software AG's Digital Business Platform.I managed a globally distributed team of software engineers, architects and managers who developed and supported the Universal Messaging product. Significant challenges in this role included: consolidating the recent rapid growth of the product team; driving adoption of new processes to improve scalability and resilience; and managing the competing demands of product management-led innovation, customer co-innovation, and internal KPI targets. As a suite-wide messaging fabric, Universal Messaging must handle a wide variety of use cases ranging from traditional enterprise integration through to Internet of Things connectivity and high-performance financial trading systems. I worked closely with product owners, product managers, field teams and key customers to define the Universal Messaging roadmap, plan releases and manage their delivery by the product R&D teams. -
Director R&D (Apama & Universal Messaging)Software Ag May 2015 - Oct 2017Darmstadt, Hessen, DeIn this role I was responsible for the development and delivery of the Apama Complex Event Processing (CEP) platform, Apama Capital Markets Foundation and Universal Messaging products, all parts of Software AG's IoT Analytics business line.I managed a team of software engineers, architects and managers across eight locations in six countries. While my focus was primarily on Universal Messaging, I was also involved with the release of the Apama Community Edition and helping to build the growing community around this free version of the Apama platform. Our development projects generally fell into two major themes: 1) greater integration with the Software AG suite, particularly Universal Messaging as the common messaging fabric for the suite; and 2) product innovation including features to enable Internet of Things solutions and elastic, cloud-based deployment. -
Senior Software Engineering ManagerSoftware Ag Jul 2013 - May 2015Darmstadt, Hessen, DeThe Apama business was acquired from Progress Software by Software AG in July 2013. I transferred to Software AG as part of this acquisition. In this role I was responsible for the development and delivery of the Apama Complex Event Processing platform and the Apama Capital Markets Foundation, acting as an Agile Product Owner and managing the geographically distributed R&D teams that delivered several releases of the Apama products each year.Immediately before and after the acquisition of the Apama business, I was responsible for managing the transition of Apama's R&D infrastructure, processes and data from Progress Software to Software AG. All transitions had to be completed by a fixed date after the acquisition, and all systems had to remain usable throughout the transition period. -
Senior Software Engineering ManagerProgress Software Mar 2011 - Jul 2013Burlington, Massachusetts, UsI was responsible for the development and delivery of the Apama Capital Markets product set. I occupied the Scrum Product Owner role, and also directly and indirectly managed the geographically distributed engineering teams that consistently delivered several releases of these products each year. This role required close collaboration with many other groups within Progress as well as with customers, partners and third-party vendors. Some of the notable projects and initiatives I led or contributed to in this role included: transforming Apama's Capital Markets Solutions from custom field deliverables into supported products, development and delivery of training courses to customers and partners worldwide, promoting and moving the Apama engineering teams to an agile development process, and initiating a regular series of technical deep-dive meetings to foster improved collaboration between the engineering and field teams. -
Software Engineering ManagerProgress Software Jun 2008 - Mar 2011Burlington, Massachusetts, UsIn this role I was primarily responsible for hiring, training, mentoring and managing a new team to take on development of the Apama Capital Markets Foundation (CMF) product. The CMF began as a collection of patterns and best practices implemented in professional services projects, that were brought under engineering ownership and re-implemented as an integrated, product-quality library of components and services for building capital markets applications on the Apama CEP platform.Alongside building the CMF team, I was also involved in transferring development of Apama's Capital Markets Adapter products to another new team in Progress' Hyderabad, India development centre. This required assisting with building the new team, as well as facilitating knowledge transfer from the existing team in Cambridge, many of whom then moved into the growing CMF development team. -
Connectivity Engineering ManagerProgress Software Oct 2007 - Jun 2008Burlington, Massachusetts, UsI had technical leadership of a small team formed to develop Apama's growing catalogue of Capital Markets Adapters, and began the process of transforming these from field deliverables to supported products. The team was initially drawn from the existing Apama engineering team in Cambridge, but later grew to include consultants and contractors based in several other locations.Apama's Capital Markets Adapters provide the integration between the core CEP engine and third-party price distribution and order routing systems, and are a key component of every Apama deployment. Developing these products required continuous, deep collaboration with both the third-party vendors and end users, to ensure that they meet the vendor's technical specifications and the customer's business requirements. -
Principal Software EngineerProgress Software Apr 2005 - Oct 2007Burlington, Massachusetts, UsFollowing the acquisition of Apama by Progress Software, I continued working on the development of the Apama CEP platform, most notably on a patented continuous availability architecture for the core event processing engine.I maintained my involvement in other aspects of the Apama business, working with the field teams and directly with customers on professional services projects. I also contributed to the due diligence evaluation of potential acquisitions by Progress Software. -
Freebsd CommitterFreebsd Oct 2003 - Nov 2008I built and maintained the xe(4) Ethernet driver and made various other contributions to the FreeBSD open-source operating system project. -
Senior Software EngineerApama Dec 2000 - Apr 2005Cambridge, GbI joined Apama when it was a small but rapidly expanding early-stage startup. My main responsibility was as a member of the engineering team developing the Apama "correlator" event processing engine and its associated APIs and tools. While in this role I led the design and implementation of the Apama Integration Adapter Framework (IAF) and correlator plug-in framework, and made significant contributions to many other projects, including: inter-process communication protocols, multi-language client APIs, distributed monitoring and management tools, and a framework for automatic web-based dashboard generation. The latter is the subject of a granted patent. As is typical in a startup environment, I contributed to many other areas of the business outside my core responsibilities, including product management, pre-sales, professional services, training, IT infrastructure, and customer technical support. I worked directly, on-site and remotely, with many of Apama's early customers, and also administered the company's network infrastructure and development systems for a number of years. -
Research AssociateUniversity Of Cambridge Jun 1999 - Dec 2000Cambridge, England, GbAfter completing my Ph.D research at the University of London, I worked on the QoS DREAM project in the Laboratory for Communications Engineering, University of Cambridge. This project investigated the integration of multimedia frameworks with event-based notifications, leading to the development of a location-sensitive, quality-of-service aware multimedia communications platform. The results of the research were documented in several peer-reviewed academic publications. -
Research AssistantUniversity Of Waikato Nov 1993 - Aug 1995Hamilton, Waikato, NzConcurrently with my MCMS degree at Waikato, I worked on the WEKA project in the Computer Science department's Machine Learning research group.
