Summer internship within the bridges team in the Birmingham office.During my placement I assisted in a general bridge inspection and authored a general inspection and options report. I furthered my abilities in AutoCAD and REVIT, drawing my designs and correcting drawings for Canal and River Trust projects. I spent time checking drawings against the project specifications for a project that is in its construction phase. I completed and presented a conceptual footbridge design for an internal Arcadis summer intern project, using software, design codes and design specifications. This project meant I was working with other interns throughout the UK, collaborating and communicating efficiently whilst the team was spread over the various UK offices. Over the three months I attended site visits to the M4 smart motorway upgrade, Rochester Bridge refurbishment and Springhead Bridge in Ebbsfleet. This taught me the scale of projects and the issues that arise once work starts and their costly influence. A good design should have incorporated the method of construction throughout.

Summer intern working in the M6 Site Office on the Smart Motorway Upgrade.Through this placement I gained site experience. This involved working in a high-pressure environment and practicing safe, onsite behaviour.

I spent the summer working within the structures team, learning about the industry and the depth of the large structure design and modelling. I completed rebar checks of a skewed motorway under bridge, learning on the job about reinforced concrete and how to read drawings for construction. I assisted on a canal towpath upgrade, drawing the proposed design on AutoCAD following the site visit. I also assisted with a bridge inspection and completed the report of the inspection findings. I became an integrated and trusted team member, finishing jobs on time and to a reliably good standard.
