Automation is my passion. Since I was a kid I've been fascinated with machines that could do things by themselves. As such I've found a field that I thoroughly enjoy working. A universal goal that I've had regardless of where I've worked is to be a versatile employee. I believe that versatility is a key factor to being a valuable asset to the company. As such, I like to always be learning something new. I've been known to study technical materials on my own time to bolster my knowledge. Control Systems Specialist
For the last several years I've been involved in the day-to-day engineering support of the DeltaV DCS system. This included troubleshooting failures of Controllers and I/O as well as the network and server infrastructure that comprises the back end of the DCS system. In addition, some of my time was spent assisting craftspeople with researching field devices and system failures as well as assisting operators with identifying process control problems. This has extended into other topics like OPC… Show more For the last several years I've been involved in the day-to-day engineering support of the DeltaV DCS system. This included troubleshooting failures of Controllers and I/O as well as the network and server infrastructure that comprises the back end of the DCS system. In addition, some of my time was spent assisting craftspeople with researching field devices and system failures as well as assisting operators with identifying process control problems. This has extended into other topics like OPC and PI Processbook. I was the preferred site resource for troubleshooting PROFIBUS networks.In a secondary capacity I worked with the PLCs that provided motor control in our plant. Traditionally, these PLC's have been GE 90 series PLCs. I've done quite a bit of monitoring and analyzing the ladder logic programs in these PLCs using GE Proficy. I’ve also gained some experience working with Allen Bradley ControlLogix PLCs last year as the concentrator has been undergoing a migration.More recently, I was the lead control engineering resource for the in-pit crusher and conveyor network. This network utilizes several Siemens S7 PLCs and a Wonderware Intouch HMI. As such, I've become proficient in using Step7 to modify functions written in both Statement List and Ladder LogicI've worked on several control engineering projects, many of which I was the lead on. Some of the tasks encountered on these projects were:- Developing Control Philosophies- Drawing/Updating electrical schematics and prints using AutoCAD- Creating PID control loops in the DeltaV DCS- Creating/Modifying SFC controls- Commissioning instruments- Modifying Graphics in the DCS- Modifying/Creating Ladder Logic in PLCs- Creating complex control strategies such as cascade control, split range control, override control, and control selectors Show less

One of the main difficulties I encountered was inadequate documentation. Electrical prints could be difficult to find and often contained errors. I quickly became efficient at taking the documentation available, correlating it with what I found in the field, and using the sum of both to identify and solve the problem. In the same timeframe, I also began using GE proficy, DeltaV Control Studio, DeltaV Diagnostics and PI process book to assist with diagnosing problems. While I had no formal training on any of these products, I used knowledge gained at my previous job, combined with the online documentation, to become skilled in their use.I also learned about power distribution in large industrial plants, including using a single line drawing. This position really cemented my troubleshooting and repair skills. It was a box plant where we used Martin converting equipment, and a BHS corrugator. I learned many different skills here including basic plumbing. The machines were mechanically complex. They had eccentric and regular shafts, cams, gears, and sprockets. While I had some basic mechanical inclination, learning to troubleshoot and repair the mechanical components on these machines was a challenge. I learned many different skills here including basic plumbing. The machines were mechanically complex. They had eccentric and regular shafts, cams, gears, and sprockets. While I had some basic mechanical inclination, learning to troubleshoot and repair the mechanical components on these machines was a challenge. With experience, I began to excel at identifying mechanical issues and repairing them.As for control systems, these machines primarily dealt in discrete signals with relays and PLCs. Since we didn't have an engineering department, or a MOC process, maintenance made modifications as they saw fit. I was allowed carte blanche access to the Allen Bradley PLC5s and SLC500s that controlled the conveyor systems, pre-feeders, and stackers, with the understanding not to "screw anything up."This gave me a good chance to look at programs written by others. I learned to see which programming methods worked best. With time, my boss asked me to modify a program to accommodate a change in conveyor layout. Due to this success, I was asked to modify additional programs as conveyor layouts continued to change.I found other opportunities to use my abilities with controls. For example, I designed and installed a lighting control that turned on high wattage halogen lights when someone walked through a pathway and triggered a photoelectric sensor. Show less
