I teach private saxophone lessons, work in mental health specializing in work with addictions and depression/anxiety, and play in a band. I'm applying to graduate schools to go on for my MSW. My senior capstone from Lawrence University proposed that music therapy is an effective treatment for older adults dealing with depression, including those with dementia, because it has fewer adverse effects than medication, can be made accessible to older adults with limited resources, and could be developed to work in conjunction with other services available to older adults. The other services would include occupational therapists who could be trained by music therapists which can help with accessibility and cost-effectiveness because the trained music therapists do not always have to be there, and the occupational therapists can have music therapy knowledge which makes it more accessible to clients.
