PhD Scholarship – New technologies to enhance resistance to oyster herpes virus BBSRC CASE funded studentship in collaboration with the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (Weymouth). Responsible for designing, running, budgeting, and presenting cutting-edge novel research improving resistance to disease in farmed Pacific oysters. Specialisms include genetic engineering, primary cell culture, whole animal disease challenge, and aquatic animal husbandry. Designed and implemented project from start to finish.Published two first-author peer-reviewed articles with two more underway. Successfully obtained funding for and ran a pilot-project investigating the impact of electromagnetic radiation on oyster larval development. Peer reviewed paper for Federation of European Biochemical Societies Open Bio journal. Advised on the scientific merit of a grant proposal for US-Israel Binational Agricultural Research and Development Fund. Deep literature review on the spread of spring viraemia of carp virus in the European Union and beyond. Generated expert summary of the disease for key decision makers and stakeholders which was subsequently used to produce a paper: “Assessment of listing and categorisation of animal diseases within the framework of the Animal Health Law (Regulation (EU) 2016/429): Spring Viraemia of Carp (SVC)”. Working independently within the framework of the EFSA remotely while traveling. Excellent attention to detail, analysis of complex issues and communication to both experts and non-experts to achieve all desired outputs within tight deadlines.

Final preparation of manuscripts for peer-reviewed publication using data generated during PhD.

Assisting principal investigator to produce transgenic mosquitoes for reduction of disease in humans. Required highly specialised animal husbandry to be delivered at frequent crucial deadlines for work packages. Communication and prioritisation of time and resources was essential. Resulted in no disruption of overall project timeline with staff absences.

I was able to continue the work I began during my dissertation project investigating the sale of shark products in the UK during a summer internship with the University of Exeter's molecular ecology and evolution research group. I worked independently on a new branch of the project investigating illegal shark fin seizures using genetic approaches. This role involved significant aspects of laboratory work, data collection and analysis. The outcome of this role was a presentation at the FSBI 50th anniversary conference where I was awarded a prize for my talk. Furthermore, a submission to a peer-reviewed scientific journal has been made.

This was a 10 week full time laboratory internship. Funding for my work was acquired independently with the help of my supervisor Dr James Cresswell. The focus of my work was to understand the effects of neonicotinoid pesticides on bumblebee thermogenesis. The results of this work are currently in the process of being published in a peer-reviewed scientific journal, wherein I will be a named author.

Jobs involve mowing lawn, cutting hedges, weeding, clearing ponds, digging and other odd jobs. Working independently to my client’s specifications has given me the ability to take initiative and to solve problems effectively. I was able to grow my workload so that I was able to finance a car, which add a budgeting element to my work.

My responsibilities varied daily, but included customer service, sales, assisting manufacture and cleaning. As I developed in this role I also became responsible for pricing goods and services provided by the company as well as negotiating with customers. This role required me to be very flexible and helped me to develop strong interpersonal skills with both clients and colleagues.
