It was once said that “leaders have three fundamental responsibilities: They craft a vision, build alignment, and champion execution.” As a long-term operational executive, I can confidently say that all three have been critical to my success over the years. With responsibility for a broad range of functions – including finance, IT, HR, and facilities management – setting a vision and execution plan that binds and aligns these diverse groups together is paramount. As an operator, not surprisingly, there is increased weight placed on my ability to execute flawlessly. Fortunately, I love to get things done and make the lives of employees/owners easier. Delivering efficiencies, cost savings, and performance enhancements across diverse areas adds excitement to my work. In fact, it is not uncommon for me to be wearing an accounting hat in the morning and a construction hat in the afternoon. In the end, I manage details closely which allows our employees and leaders to focus on the two most important things: their work and their customers.As I look back, I likely enjoyed my role in transforming my organization most. Like many small companies that hit a growth spurt, the need for more sophisticated processes, systems, and structures becomes critical. I have helped my organization navigate several transitions – and as an execution-oriented professional – got them to the future state without business disruptions, employee turnover, and customer issues.
