Manager
CurrentFirefighter/Paramedic
CurrentI began my career with Montgomery County as a part time Paramedic in 1994, when the service upgraded to Advanced Life Support. For a couple of years I worked almost all of the open shifts due to vacation or sick time. In 1998 I became a full time Paramedic on 3rd platoon. That job was transitioned into Firefighter/Paramedic in 1999. I worked primary on the EC unit. When I took the flight paramedic job, I continued to work part time doing the EMS billing and as a Paramedic. I returned to shift work in 2006 on 3rd platoon. I later moved to 1st Platoon and promoted to Captain. I was assigned to both Engines 1 and 3 during my tenure as Captain. I moved to EMS Major in 2009.Montgomery County Fire/EMS is the sole provider of suppression and EMS service to the citizens of Montgomery County. We respond to 6,000 EMS and 1300 Fire calls a year. We cover 199 square miles incorporating all areas of the county. MCFDEMS has 7 stations, 3 of which are staffed with career personnel.
Battalion Chief
In June 2015, I transitioned from EMS Major over to Battalion Chief for 1st platoon Montgomery County Fire/EMS. The Battalion Chief position oversees daily operations of 15 personnel providing 3 ALS transport units, 2 Engine Companies and an EMS Captain out of three career and four volunteer stations.
Ems Major
I was promoted to the newly commissioned position of EMS Major in 2009. This position was created to manage the EMS division. Our department had experienced considerable growth and increase in call volume for several years. As anyone in EMS management knows....EMS is a beast. Managers have to juggle clinical, operational, business, human resources and political bombs on a daily basis. Dealing with staff, customers, patients, families and stakeholders can be difficult at times. Our department has always worked to provide excellent, evidence based prehospital medicine to our customers. During my tenure, I've watched as our service went from a small county EMS service to a regionally recognized top shelf EMS provider. Our crews are not only providing care but are beginning to direct care. Our staff members are stepping up serving on the county, region and state level. With all the changes to healthcare this is a very scary time. But it is a very exciting time also. Our industry sets on the cusp of re-inventing itself. Becoming more a part of the healthcare industry. A seat at the table that it has always deserved. Hospitals and other providers are starting to figure out that EMS, as clinicians, enter the patient into the healthcare system. For progressive services this means that it is time to diversify and expand services. The next 3 to 5 years are going to be a roller coaster. Hopefully we will see our industry expand to be know as....Mobile Healthcare. I am just glad that I have the opportunity to help shape EMS in Kentucky during this exciting time.
Sales
Sales for Southeast Apparatus, LLC specializing in custom Fire Apparatus, AEV ambulances and fire equipment. My primary area for apparatus and equipment is east-central Kentucky and statewide for ambulances.
Flight Paramedic/Business Development Coordinator
I was hired as a Flight Paramedic for KY2 which was housed at Saint Claire Regional Medical Center. About 2 months after I was hired we moved the base to Station 2 Montgomery County Fire/EMS. That move gave us greater flexibility and better position in the area. That lead to KY2 being one of the busiest helicopters in KY. I worked with outstanding flight nurses, paramedics and pilots. There is no way to replace the critical care experience I gained as a flight paramedic. It has helped me tremendously through the rest of my career. I not only learned to take care of critical patients, I learned to speak and act as a clinician. The second part of my career with LifeNet Kentucky was as a Business Development Coordinator. What most see as simply a "PR" job is a whole lot more. Developing business is about developing relationships. Taking care of customers patients while also helping the customer succeed. I learned about the "business" side of EMS. Whether it ground or air, it's still business. I owe a lot of my "business" thinking to my counterparts and a company called Think Through Tools (Rich Obertots).
Paramedic
Began working at Bath County Ambulance Service as a EMT-Basic. Our service was a pilot program for EMT-D...EMT with Defibrillator endorsement. That was a big deal back in the early 90's. Now defibrillators are everywhere. Worked at the service during Paramedic class and throughout the transition to Advanced Life Support. Served as Director from 1996 to 2000.
Paramedic
Worked as a part time Paramedic for LifeStar Ambulance Service owned and operated by Larry I. Leedy. My first and only venture into the world of private EMS.
