This work is about building bridges between education and health sectors, both of which are necessary to ensure that all students in Washington State are able to participate to their fullest capacities in academic endeavors. By identifying and implementing mutual goals among OSPI internal departments, and with state partners such as the Department of Early Learning, the Health Care Authority, the Department of Health, and the Department of Social and Health Services, greater efficiencies and outcomes are achieved. These focused and sustained partnerships more efficiently and effectively meet individual agency goals, and also produce synergistic effects that have a positive collective impact on students, families, school districts and communities.Managing educational access and achievement by improving children's health status spans a wide and varied territory throughout Washington State. My work includes oversight of projects and programs such as School Nurse Corps, the Home Hospital program, and, in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control, a nurse case management program for poor students with poorly controlled asthma. I also create guiding documents, manuals and resources for nurses, school administrators and families; and participate in a wide network of community, state and national organizations and agencies that approach improvements in education and health through specific means for specific populations. I look forward to continuing to serve our State residents by advancing innovation and excellence in education and health, and by reducing academic and health disparities. This will move our children closer to having the educational preparation necessary to allow them to select from the palette of choices that should await every high school graduate. In turn, our State will enjoy increased safety, improved justice, and higher employment and productivity.

Forecast and respond to trends in nursing practice in Washington State, and advocate for legislation, policy, and regulations that preserve, promote, and protect nursing practice and patient safety.
