Having overcome obesity myself and learned a lot about health and fitness, I became a personal trainer. In addition to one-to-one sessions, goal setting and planning, I also ran several group classes, including online nutrition and weight management support group. When Les Mills instructors fell sick, I would quickly write and deliver a circuit.I continued to improve my knowledge with a wealth of CPD, including GP exercise referral qualifications. Although I was becoming successful and well-valued by the David Lloyd Health club staff and members, the stress on my income being self-employed was not well suited for my family life. My well thought out, evidence-based and personalised approach was particularly suited to education and behavioural change, but not well suited to sales. My enthusiasm for developing and supporting others always took priority.Returning to engineering, I took up part-time study at the Open University in psychology. I realised that the only authentic way to help people was through behavioural change rather than repeat sales. Trying to balance being a supervisor on wind turbines, family life, and psychology was quite challenging. I took a role in mental health that would expose me to care and mental health support.Despite having no previous experience in care, I rapidly learned and applied the knowledge I gained in other sectors and my education in psychology.Within two years, I was successful in becoming a Senior Support Worker. I assist both service users and staff in food choices or appropriate substitutions. Several service users have specific diets and food requirements due to various conditions. I encourage and run group activities and try to incorporate exercise into daily living. My belief in the critical part of ‘personal’ in personal trainer is echoed in the concept of person-centred care. I also assist with writing care plans, risk assessments and sharing my knowledge of psychology with other carers.I obtained my MSc in Health Psychology, where I continued to build my knowledge of health behaviour change. I have also utilised the Behavioural Change Wheel and MRC Framework for Developing Complex Interventions to design an intervention for an assignment.I enjoy being part of a multi-disciplinary team, and my eclectic experience has shown me the advantages of team diversity. I have worked both as a close-knit unit in the RAF, wind turbines and care, plus alone and self-supervised as a mobile technician, travelling all over Scotland and managing my servicing schedule.
