I paint as a form of expression. My work is mainly figurative (portrait and life) and abstract, rarely towns cape or landscape. I wish to express the positive aspects of humanity in my work. I am genuinely interested in people and strive to capture the essence of their characters in my colourful portraits and figure studies (in oil,acrylic, watercolour, chalk and oil pastel) and in my more sombre pencil and charcoal drawings. My abstract work is sometimes based on an abstraction of a scene or an object lodged in my memory and sometimes, more recently, purely abstract, a matter of the juxtaposition of colours and shapes to evoke an emotional response in the viewer. By the nature of abstract painting, this response will be a very individual one, unique to each viewer.My main influences are the rich Jewish culture I have inherited from my Eastern European forebears, the work of writers like Franz Kafka, Isaac Bashevis Singer, Bernard Malamud an Herman Hesse, and African and oriental carvings and paintings. Painters I admire are the Pissarros (father and son), Van Gogh, Cezane, Gaugin, Toulouse Lautrec, Egon Schiele, Yankel Adler and the contemporary Israeli artist, Yosl Bergner. For some years I have taken a keen interest in print-making and have produced lithographs, etchings and silkscreen prints. My images have been inspired by Mexican and oriental designs and motifs and also by geometrical shapes.Going to art college as a mature student was a great boon to me. It immensely broadened my artistic horizons and greatly developed my artistic skills. I am indebted to my friend Udi Merioz, director and proprietor of the Blue and White Gallery in Jerusalem, whose encouragement and tuition enabled me to gain a place on the four-year degree course at Edinburgh College of Art from which I graduated twenty years ago.
