About Robin Bush
I have 25 years of experience in Indonesia, Singapore, and Malaysia, working on policy reform, research, program design and implementation, business and strategy development, and representation. My areas of expertise are governance, political-economy analysis, refugee advocacy, international development, religion and development, and knowledge sector programming.Previously I was the Director of RTI International's Asia Regional Office in Jakarta. I represented RTI's provision of advisory and technical services throughout the region. Before being named director, I led RTI's research and strategic collaborations in Asia, seeking to diversify and engage RTI's client base. I also headed the Knowledge Sector Initiative, an Australian government-funded project in Indonesia aimed at strengthening evidence-based public policy. My research interests currently focus on refugee studies and refugee advocacy. Immediately before joining RTI in 2014, I was a Senior Research Fellow in the Religion and Globalization cluster at the Asia Research Institute (ARI), National University of Singapore (NUS). My background also includes more than a decade at The Asia Foundation in Indonesia, and working in a series of strategic and research roles in Singapore and Indonesia. Having grown up and lived most of my adult life in Indonesia, I am a close observer of Indonesian politics and society, as well as Southeast Asia more broadly. I hold a PhD in political science from the University of Washington. I am the author of numerous articles and chapters on Indonesian politics, Islam and religious and development, as well as my monograph:Nahdlatul Ulama and the Struggle for Power within Islam and Politics in Indonesia, ISEAS press, March 2009
