From the ground up Apex was built on the values of hard work, innovative ethical mushing techniques, and the pure love and respect for our animals. Many years were spent developing and maintaining sponsorship relations as well as making a positive influence within the community in which we worked and lived. Our strategic breeding program produced some of the best athletes seen in the top competitive teams today. The peak of my involvement with Apex kennels was having our team finish 8th place out of 70+ mushers and rewarded with the Leonhard Seppala Humanitarian award for dog care excellence in the 2013 Iditarod Sled Dog race. In the summers our focus was channeled to the education and history of mushing through tourism with the Alaska Native Heritage center and helicopter glacier tours. Many skills were acquired through managing the day to day operations, marketing, and implementation of training/race plans of a competitive sled dog kennel.

Living in a remote field camp next to the Susitna River for 4 months proved to be a true testament for the ability to adapt to a unique situation. My main objective was to assist fellow technicians and biologist in the biological field study of Susitna River salmon. My day to day operation consisted of operating a 70 HP jet boat for a rotation to different fish wheels, Identifying and sampling salmon, collecting data, and implementing the data into spreadsheets. At each fish wheel station, maintenance was performed to ensure the structure and integrity of our study was in no way compromised. The attention to these details enabled our study to successfully be conducted in a spectrum of weather conditions. For each salmon sampled, a series of steps including identification and length were conducted to determine what process that fish would take. The fish were carefully and quickly sampled to obtain DNA samples, inserted radio tag, DART Tag, or a clipped adipose fin for immediate release. The bush plane telemetry study following our sampled fish showed great success in the data collected for our study as well as a low mortality rate.
