Family Development SpecialistSafy Aug 2011 - Jul 2013In my role as the Family Development Specialist at SAFY, a therapeutic foster care agency in Lexington, KY, I had the opportunity of training individuals who are interested in becoming foster parents. I was responsible for teaching various curricula, such as the effect of trauma on children’s developing brains, cultural diversity, behavior management, the grief cycle, and de-escalation classes. I was also responsible for gathering pertinent information for the family in order to complete their foster parent application. I worked with a team to determine if a family should become licensed as a foster parent, and if they are licensed, which children they would be best matched with. The clinical skills I learned while in my Counseling Psychology Master’s Program helped me in this role as I have a better understanding of the diagnoses the children have, and also ways to help a family understand how to better parent a child who has a unique set of needs. -
