I am an anthropologist and an ethnographer. My academic work has largely focused on cultural economy, the study of the intersections of economic life and business practice to the background social, political, psychological, and religious lifeworld that anthropologists refer to as ‘culture.' This work has included examining how the Corporate Social Responsibility efforts of companies in the Sultanate of Oman contribute to and extend the governance practices of the state; how state-guided investments in citizen employees and entrepreneurs in Oman reproduce an older system of distributive rights and obligations in a new language of development and enterprise; how traditional public ovens contribute to the domestic life of a neighborhood in Rabat, Morocco; and how the US craft beer brewing industry overcomes the socio-technical challenge of producing sensuously consistent products that live up to consumers’ brand expectations. I am currently an instructor in the Department of Global and Sociocultural Studies at Florida International University (FIU) in Miami, FL and a podcast host for the Anthropology Channel of the New Books Network. I am in the process of transitioning to a career outside of academia and am looking for opportunities in the fields of management consulting, qualitative research, consumer insights, and UX research.
