As a specialist in intellectual property (IP) and registered U.S. patent attorney, I combine my electrical engineering, business, and legal experiences to develop thoughtful IP strategies for technology companies—particularly for those designing sophisticated software, electrical circuitry, and optoelectronics. In general, my legal practice includes U.S. and foreign patent procurement, worldwide patent-portfolio management, patent opinions, product clearance and freedom-to-operate assessments, IP transactions including IP aspects of corporate mergers and acquisitions, and patent disputes.For example, I provide counsel on whether to protect your invention by patent and, when appropriate, I help you secure commercially meaningful U.S. and foreign patents. And once secured, I assist in your efforts to monetize, defend, and enforce your IP. Should you become concerned about patent infringement, then I can advise you on that too by creatively exploiting flaws in complex patents that might otherwise frustrate your business objectives. If I find flaws indicating a patent was improperly granted, then I will provide solutions for invalidating that patent in, e.g., inter partes proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board of the United States Patent and Trademark Office or litigation before federal courts. I also apply my technical, business, and legal skills to your technology transactions, with an emphasis on software and patent licensing.In addition to my practice, I serve as Treasurer of and pro bono counsel for The Optical Society (OSA), Columbia Section, which I incorporated as an Oregon public benefit corporation.
