Subsequent to the reorganization of Vulcan Materials Company in December of 2012, I moved into a corporate role of VP of Strategy and Business Development. This role dealt with M&A activity and strategy development assisting in the development of short- and long-term strategies for Vulcan Materials Company and the newly formed Regions. Duties included providing planning, investment, and divestment support to the Regions identifying business development, growth, and realignment opportunities; ensuring these are delivered in accordance with the overall organizational strategy. As needs changed, I accepted the role of leading Corporate Process Improvement; coordinating and rolling-out a process improvement process and support capability across the company footprint thus ensuring that these processes are developed consistently across the corporation. I held these roles until my timely retirement after 32 years with Vulcan Materials Company.

In this position, I held executive management responsibility for a major division of this S&P 500 Company. Vulcan is the largest construction materials supplier in the United States and this Division serves the states of Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana and Michigan. Responsible for all aspects of the business including: financial, sales, operations, engineering, marketing, human resources and legal. Directed activities related to strategic planning, forecasting, business unit planning, capital authorizations, growth initiatives and business development. Responsibilities include membership on the Company’s Executive Committee, which is responsible for steering the direction of the construction materials businesses.

This position represents senior management responsibility for this Division of Vulcan Materials Company. Responsible for all engineering, marketing, exploration, procurement operational, sales and marketing activities including sales force management, market forecasting, customer relationship management and pricing strategies. This position required collaborative behaviors with the division finance and human resource groups on a tactical and strategic basis. Directed activities to improve operational productivity, enhance product quality and develop supervisory personnel. Responsibility also included strategic planning and required development of regional sales and operating teams to meet increasing demands of a growing metropolitan area.

I directed the operational activities of a major Division of Vulcan Materials Company. This responsibility included 32 crushed stone operations including both granite and limestone operations. The responsibilities grew from regional management to Division wide. Additional duties included engineering and procurement for the Division as well as strategic planning and chairman of the Company’s Operating Committee.

I directed the operational activities of a major area of Vulcan Materials Company. This area grew from 14 operations in 1990 to 24 operations in 1998. I oversaw the development of the operating organization and included employee safety and health, environmental compliance, productivity efforts, cost control and reduction, operating budgets, capital expenditure, mine planning, greenfield site analysis and development and plant modification projects.

Managed the largest location owned by Vulcan Materials Company at that time. Oversaw the activities of approximately 150 unionized employees producing over 8-million tons of aggregates annually. This complex supplied construction aggregates shipped by truck, rail and barge, mineral filler products for a number of consumer products, ready-mix batch plant feed, feed for pebble lime operations, transportation services for coal and coke for lime production and maintenance services Division-wide. Responsibilities included employee safety and health, environmental compliance, productivity efforts, cost control and cost reduction, operating budgets and capital expenditures. This was a multi-lingual operation providing a complexity to the operation in itself.

Supervision of the mining operations and mining engineering in the general Syracuse area. Responsibilities included the chemical stone and commercial stone quarry and the engineering for the brine wells in Tully, NY. In Green River, WY, I was a production mining engineer and a shift foreman.

We were building a water tunnel for the Denver Water Board. I was the engineering representative to the contractor on a shift. Responsibilities included contract compliance, technical compliance, and productivity measurement.
